The 86 Montero
Hey its jbfp! That's cool you came over here. You gonna start your wrench fest back up in here?
Sort of, I guess. For the uninitiated, my '86 SWB shed its 2.6 with the 3 speed auto and took in a 2.4 from a 90 Mighty Max and a 4 speed KM-148 non-lock up. Since it has the wrong oil pan, this motor also leaks a lot of oil due to the contact with the front differential, so it's basically in the same situation as it was when the AZ Crew suggested the swap in the first place. Except now it is all goofballed up gearing-wise, since the early SWB's had some weirdo 3.90-ish gears in the diffs, and I'm running 33" tires. It does 72 mph at 2750 rpm while indicating just under 60 mph, for a 25% speedometer error.
Since I just got done redoing the front suspension, steering and brakes, I'm in no mood to tear into the front again to replace the front diff with a 4.625, as it should have (and I have, back in one of my sheds). Why I didn't do it at the time, I don't know. Guess I never really drove it far enough before to notice how bad the gearing was. Of course, fixing the rear diff is easy, but does me little good unless I stay in 2WD. Ah well. At least it drive. Not good for heavier-duty fo-wheeling, though, as I know I'll overheat the transmission, as started to happen in Crown King the other week when it refused to shift out of first for a while (I'm assuming there's no trans temp light hooked up, since I didn't get one; also don't have a gauge for trans temp).
On the flat portions of the US 60, it'll hold 70 easy in 4th gear, but any uphill slants, even for overpasses means keying the overdrive button off and dropping into third. It pulls pretty good in third and will easily hit 85 if you're not watching things. I should probably just try to forget I even have OD and drive it like that. Might get better mileage, even, since I'd suppose I get lots of converter slip trying to push that refrigerator box through the air (2" body lift, too).
Ah well, you're all caught up now, at least on this one. It's a decent enough vehicle, now that LordTrunks cleaned up the wiring. Lots of people helped make this one possible and I extend my thanks to everybody that helped. Just have to figure out what to do with it now. My 95 will be coming home to roost before too long and I'll hardly ever drive the 86, so who knows what'll happen to it. We'll see...
