I noticed a few weeks ago that the power steering was not feeling that great and on cold mornings it would make a little noise. After looking at the power steering fluid I decided it definitely needed a flush. I broke out the FSM and figured out what fluid it takes (Dexron II) and the procedure. It was definitely due for a flush and it actually made a difference in the feel in the steering wheel. Seems the PS fluid is often overlooked when PM'ing. It was easy to do, you remove the return line from the reservoir and plug it on the reservoir side, I then got some clear hose and a 3/8"-3/8" barb adapter and hooked the hose to the container then just bumped the starter if it starts, shut it off right away. I checked the fluid constantly until it was clean red. Put everything back together and a trip to the car wash, it is a messy job. All in all about an hour to do it, not too bad. A few pictures...

Everything need to do the job.

The 3/8" barb connector and the clear hose. Also, notice the plug on the reservoir.

Pretty dark fluid, and the nice clean fluid. I ran about 2 quarts thru it.

After I changed the PS fluid the Cruiser started running really rough, after I changed the O2 sensor a few weeks ago it has really been purring until I changed the PS fluid? I know changing the fluid has nothing to do with how it runs right? Well yes and no, anyway I broke out the FSM and started checking things, I got to the O2 sensors and when I pulled the plug apart a tiny bit of water dripped out, WTH??? After I changed the PS fluid I took it to the car wash and power washed all the PS fluid out of the engine bay, I guess I got some water in the plugs for the O2 sensors and they were doing weird things. Well I cleaned them out real good and got some dielectric grease and packed the plugs with the grease. I also packed every electrical plug I could get to and see. Kind of frustrating but I got it figured out and she is running and idling as smooth as ever again.
I would recommend everyone get some dielectric grease and apply it to all the electrical plugs you can see/find.

I ran into this same problem a few weeks ago after some puddle splashing. After I packed the connections with grease I haven't had any problems, no more CEL code being thrown either, not sure if its related. I now keep a tube of dialectic grease in the glove box.

I had to make a trip to SLC on Monday and the Cruiser averaged 14.8 MPG for the 450 mile trip! I know most people look at that and think that is terrible, but if you own a Cruiser you know that ain't bad, especially for a rig on 35's and weighing in at 6,00 pounds! She purred the whole way down and back never missing a beat. :ylsmoke:

Tires, bumpers, and sliders are well done. That is one heavy swing out gate.

Love your 80.

Thanks!

Did a little Steelhead fishing last weekend over in Salmon Idaho. Didn't catch a damn thing, but the scenery was beautiful! I will definetly be going back whenever I can. For those of you that don't know, Idaho is the only land locked state that has Steelhead. Steelhead trout belong to the family Salmonidae which includes all salmon, trout, and chars. Steelhead are similar to some Pacific salmon in their life cycle and ecological requirements. They are born in fresh water streams, where they spend their first 1-3 years of life. They then emigrate to the ocean where most of their growth occurs. After spending between one to four growing seasons in the ocean, steelhead return to their native fresh water stream to spawn. Unlike Pacific salmon, steelhead do not necessarily die after spawning and are able to spawn more than once. Steelhead and Salmon taste very, very similar and the Steelhaed in the North Fork of the Salmon River Average 26"-28", In Northern Idaho the y average 34"-36"!

Hey, that looks like the hood of a new Dodge not a Cruiser. I love that area too, we kayaked the South Fork of the Clearwater a few years ago in April (i think) and the Steelhead were running. A few of the fishermen didn't like us coming down "their river" but most were pleasant and seeing those monsters laying on the banks was pretty impressive. I need to go back with a rod some time.
