The Chuckbox

Never use butter to coat cast iron cookware after washing. It being an animal product, it can rot over time and could potentially make you sick. It too normally has salt in it which can make the cast iron rust, which negates the whole idea.

As far as spray can oils, the solvents in them, i would personally not be putting in my food.

The only thing that touches my cast iron cookware, is vegetable oil, canola oil, that type thing. Anything else could lead to trouble.

Just my $.02 worth

Even vegetable oils will become rancid in time. We have been using mineral oil on all the cast iron we use on our chuck wagon. In nearly 20 years, we have never had a pot go rancid. A liitle heat will vapourize the oil so it doesn't leave a residue. It can't be used to season the iron, however. It does keep it rust free and odor free between uses.
A little bit goes a long way
Happy cooking

.....
I only wish I could find a shorter can of the spray oils, as the can will not fit in upright with the lid on it.
I will not be transporting the can upright like that in case something hits the spray nozzle and discharges oil all over inside.
I will have to lay it on its side with the cap back on it.
I think these are the shortest cans you can get.

....
I posted one idea in your other thread but I just had a better idea, just pull the nozzle off and store it in a small plastic bag attached to the can with a rubber band.

Thanks rusty, I saw that earlier.

I just may put regular virgin olive oil into a small Nalgene bottle I have, and then just pour some out and rub it around with the paper towel.

Or I may just lay the spray can on its side :D
They really are convenient.
A few quick squirts and the cast iron is good to go.

I use cough syrup bottles from the pharmacy for oil. The pharmacist gives them to me free and so far I've never had one leak. They also come in a variety of sizes. I use the smaller ones in my solo kit, larger ones in the family kit.

I agree the spray stuff has advantages. I like to spray slices of eggplant with olive oil and season with itilian seasoning, then throw them on the grill just until they start to get soft.

That's really weird... It seems the forum software is putting an extra / in between the d and p after amazon.com. (It should be amazon.com/dp/...)

Anyway, do a search on Misto oil sprayer and check the "people also viewed" options.

Updated pics of chuckbox in the rig.

It sits in the same place the ARB fridge use to a few years back.
When the rig was full before with camping gear, I could not really use the rearview mirror, but not a big deal, as I use my side mirrors mostly anyways.
All the over the road work vehicles I drive at work have no rearview mirrors.
There is room at the top though so I can see out the rear window some with the rearview mirror.

I have the drawer/shelf liner down on top of the cargobox, and with the chuckbox sitting on top, it does not slide around one bit.
However for safety issues, it will be ratchet strapped in.
I need to get some foam to go under the straps to protect that fine finish on the chuckbox though ;)

I am going to take the box into work this coming week and put it on the scale.
I am guessing around 80+ as cast iron cookware is not light weight, but oh so well worth its weight in gold when it comes to cooking with it.

Great shot in photo shop  , what about beaver instead :wings:

Nice organize and well build
He he, thanks, I think titanpat did a great job on the box, and I am proud to show off his handywork.

That is a continuation of a joke from last year in the third picture.
Some couple were out camping and when they took a photo of themselves, a critter hopped into the frame of the picture.

After that all kinds of pictures started to pop up on the Internet with the same critter photoshopped into pictures.

There is a thread somewhere on the Portal here with some showing off their pics with the critter added to them.

Awesome!

Corey, the chuckbox turned out great and seems to fit nicely in your FJ. The PowerTank also adds to the setup. Is it the 10lb bottle?

Hightechcoonass, not bad for free!!

Thanks, it is a tight fit, but it works.
Yes, that is the 10 lb tank, perfect for 33" tires.
Those are LED flares hanging on the front too that says Power on it.
Someone asked me before what Powertank accessory that way, and I told them I just hang the flares there to get to them easily.

High Tech, that is what i'm talking about! Repurposed materials, are not only inexpensive but responsible!!! Well done! Next time you are cooking wipe that wood down with Canola to preserve the finish! :sombrero:

I setup my Deluxe Cabelas Table a bit ago, I am not so sure if I trust it or not to support the weight of the chuckbox.
I am guessing the total weight of the chuckbox is 80+ lb.
Cabelas does not list what the table can hold.

The table is a little on the flimsy side, but with the chuckbox centered on it, it seems OK.
I may look into a heavier duty table such as this REI one in a thread on tables.
Says it will support up to 120 lb.

I just have the funny feeling that this is going to work fine and then a fly will come and land on the table and the whole thing will collapse and burst into flames (I guess I watch The Simpsons too much).

Shameless plug, but Front Runner has a sturdy table in stainless that can hang under your rack.
