The DiscoDavis Discovery 3 Build Thread

They (FR) used? to make this 80L fuel tank that as far as I could tell was approximately the same as the Long Ranger from AU, both were for diesel trucks only or could be modified for gas (case by case).

It looks dangerous and probably won't fit. You should probably send it to my house and I'll fit it in my disco just to be sure it's safe!

as an ex of mine used to say "you can ask as nicely as you like, the answers still no!" :( lol.

162 litres of diesel should give a range of nearly 900 miles at 25mpg.
That figure should go up when the maintenance rpg hits my work out auto box and injectors.

I'm interested in the install operation to go from diesel to petrol. I have a 60 of my Aussie counterparts sitting next to me in all of their Defenders (being replaced with Merc G-wagons) and they are all about getting me parts when they get home to OZ.

Point being I can get the tanks from the two manufacturers, but they will be for diesel so I need the "know" on how to make the tank work.

There's the fitting guide. May just need a pump that can work with petrol instead of diesel.
The rest of the tank and pipework should be fine.

Oh wow, thanks for the document; this surely clears up some of my questions on the install and function.

Are you able to provide the wiring, switch and pump pictures as well with the current diesel configuration? I am curious to know how and what type of set up for pumping they are using and how they tie into the electrical? Is it just a two position switch tied into key power and you pump as you need or is there a gauge system as well?

Thanks again, super informative.

Currently.... No.

The tank is going to be fitted to mine this month.
Have the back chassis to run down, clean up and rust proof before and the cars going in to get some bodywork issues sorted.

I'll keep you updated though.

For the sake of discussion (and my own personal interest since I have one, that isn't installed yet) the tank was for either diesel or petrol and is still in production so far as I can tell. Its just that from the US website you can't 'see' it as they seem to be showing us what we're allowed to have, not what we want to have. Here's the link to the SA site but it may still redirect and force you to change the desired location:
https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.c...el-tank-land-rover-discovery-lr3-lr4.html#tab
In the product questions the petrol vs diesel question is asked.

While I didn't install mine in the UAE it is enroute to the US, I hit a point there where I didn't want to be dealing with any potential troubleshooting or codes popping when I knew she'd be inspected for export (and given that I hard to argue with the tech about her not being 'green' as the color of the truck b/c of the hood blackout I think that was the right call). Unclear, indeed unlikely, it will be a direct bolt on install but that's ok-the extra 80L will be worth it if I can sort it!

I've sent several inquiries to Frontrunner ZA about this same fuel tank and have never received a reply :(

I look forward to the install. For my last question; for now :wings:

Is it aluminum of steel and how much does it weigh?

At a rough guess.
A bit heavier than a full size spare.

It took my mate Greg and I to carry it back to the car.

I've sent FrontRunner ZA e-mails before with no response as well. However, I always get a response from FrontRunner NA and Tina and Steve have been great about contacting FrontRunner ZA on my behalf and getting things. I would try to contact through the NA distributor.

That is great info. Contacts are key.

Has anyone heard anything back on this? I'd really like to try and fit two things in for my truck... possibly three...

I do a lot of towing of a trailer... I have a Curt hitch installed to do away with the craziness of the LR hitch.. I don't mind losing the spare - I can relocate it to the roof, or possibly a rear bumper tire carrier when the time comes - to even store it in the back or in the trailer when towing.

I'm curious how much space is available around the fuel tank after installation - specifically, if it can accommodate the Curt hitch?

And of course - I'm also very interested to know what's required to support gas (petrol) vs the original diesel?

I would go with a vender hitch from here. When you say Curt hitch you mean the crossmember one under the frame right? If so, that's probably going to interfere with an aux tank and I would also guess you are losing departure angle clearance as well. (?)

My vote and eventual choice would be the Rhino Hitch.^

And haven't updated for a while, was on vacation, back to work, going away again soon for some R&R. Landy awaiting an oil change around 110k, going to try one of those Fumoto valves considering this is something like the 6th oil change in just under 2 years.

In the meantime NCLR_Bear and I placed an order for TR rear bumpers w/swingouts.... :)
