The evolution of my 80....

Well, I realized that I have no "Official" build thread, so here goes:

A little background:

I have been around motorized "stuff" all my life. My dad was a hot rodder in the 50's and a Musclecar guy in the 60's and beyond. We have run the gamut of vehicles around my childhood home, from the benign (1974 gremlin) to the insane (1962 Impala SS 409, '66 GTO, '70 GTX, etc.) I have historically been a Jeep guy. I have had: 43 MB, 72 CJ5, 77 CJ5, 79 CJ7, and an '87 Grand Wagoneer.

My old Waggy-

Anyhow. One day, my buddy Andy (Hltoppr) was giving my Waggy a tow home with his 80 after my fuel pump puked out. When I go to get my girls out of his truck, they asked "Daddy, when are you going to get a Land Cruiser?" I started looking then....

Serendipitously, there was an Engineer at my office that was getting ready to sell his 80. I bought it. That was December of '05. Here is the story of her evolution.

She was born in the Fall of 1992, one of the first FZJ80's built. Shipped off to the US and Camelback Toyota. The first owner was an Anesthesiologist in Paradise Valley. He had her for about 8 years and sold her to the Engineer that I bought her from. That said, I received impeccable documentation from day 1 forward.

There was not much more than regular maintenance for the first few years, except.....
Around 30,000 miles, the good Doctor noticed a puddle of antifreeze in his garage while backing out. Turned out to have a small crack in the block at one of the freeze plugs. Toyota installed a new engine at that time under warranty.
Around 50,000 miles, he had had a brake job done at the dealer prior to a trip to California. Somehow, the caliper bolts backed out, The caliper came loose, trashed the left wheel, knuckle, birf and hub. All was replaced at a dealer in California.

Other than that, no major issues.

The Engineer had no issues other than when his wife hit a concrete bollard at the bank and pushed the bumper into the condenser.

So I bought her with ~170k on the clock, a 140k engine, a dented front bumper and no A/C.

My first photo of her:

I got a bumper from a buddy that was the pull off as he put an ARB on his. I bought a new condenser and receiver/drier, flushed the system, and filled it with some fresh R-12.

Some wheeling in Sedona- It looks like I had removed the factory roof rack by then. I just installed some Metric buttonhead screws with a little dab of silicon on the threads. They have never been any trouble.

She did really well stock-

But of course, I had to fiddle with things...

I had also swapped in some JDM clear front corner markers that I wired up as turn and marker lights-

So as she sits right now:
1993 Toyota FZJ80 Land Cruiser
230,000 miles on chassis
42,000 miles on factory Toyota short block and factory Toyota head
Engine block coolant heater
Old Man Emu Suspension system
850 Heavy Springs Front, 863 Heavy Springs Rear
N73e Heavy Shocks Front; N74 Heavy Shocks Rear
ARB Commercial Bull Bar
Warn 8274 winch
Slee headlight harness with John Deere HIR bulbs
Optima Red Top starting battery
Optima Yellow Top auxiliary battery
Aussie locked rear differential
5- BFGoodrich 285/75-16 AT/KO tires on stock 16 inch aluminum wheels
Rear drawer system
Engel 45 Fridge
HannaQuality sliders
Slee braided stainless steel brake hoses
Slee 1” trim packers on front springs
Safari Snorkel

And that pretty much brings you up to date. I still have a box of stuff to install. I will try to do a better job of documenting henceforth.

Upcoming:
National Luna Install
ARB Full Length Roof Rack
Cargo area aux power
Inverter
2m Radio
Speedometer calibrator

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but we'll figure it out.

Cheers.

The Cruiser is rock'in too. I like the current iteration

Edit: LOL, I just got caught by our own language filter.

Can you give me your impressions of the Aussie Locker? How is it on the street? Do you wish you would have gone ARB?

The truck has only been back on the road for a couple weeks. I did take it out to a little play area by my office and tried to get stuck. I was lifting tires and all crossed up and it kept going just fine., So off road, thus far I am happy.

We have had snow and ice for the past couple days, so I have been trying it out there, too. If you floor it with the CDL unlocked, it will understeer greatly and just try to go straight. If you gas it you can break it loose. If you drive normal, it is not really noticeable. It is not hard to force it to break loose on ice, but if the CDL is locked, it will tend to follow the front driven wheel.

Thus far, I really like it. In the snow and ice, by screwing around, I have figured out some predictability of the handling. We are training each other.

Normally, in the snow, I would drive my Yukon, simply because I would be less upset if it got wasted by someone that slides into it. It has a locker, too, but it doesn't activate until there is approximately a 100 rpm delta between the wheel rotations. It is an Eaton G80 locking differential.

Looking good. And good info along the way. Thanks for posting!

The upcoming "National Luna Install"... is that their dual-battery system you're referring to?

Yes.
Hopefully this weekend will see that getting done.

I went through my stuff, and all the things that I have waiting to install are:

ARB full length roof rack
National Luna battery management system
Lightforce Striker 170 lights
Yaesu FT-7800R radio
Cargo area power
600 watt inverter
Truspeed speedometer calibrator

I'm sure I'll come across a few other things that I forgot I bought.

Cheers,

So I have about 900 miles on since I put the new engine in. At first, the mileage was horrendous while the ECU was relearning. I was getting a solid 8.5 mpg around town. I decided to do a highway blast to see how she would do. I did a 105 mile round trip that was highway only and got 17.3 mpg @ 65 mph. After the highway run refill, I let it go until the light came on. That tank was mostly city with 30 or so highway miles towing a small trailer and 10 or so off pavement driving. I was very pleased to see 11.5 mpg average. Still on the target from what is on the window sticker. Except the part that states "Estimated Annual Fuel Cost: $1384"......I wish.

That is fantastic. I love doing fuel mileage runs at 55. I can't wait to try it in my LC once it gets regeared.

Great build and looking forward to seeing how you setup the cargo area

Nice to see someone stay mellow with their build and use the rig to travel & play

MoGas, Very nice LC you're building... Our suspension is very similar (850's +1") and was wondering what are you using for caster correction? I'm currently using 2" MAF brackets, but will be switching to 3* bushings very soon. Thanks
