Are close to the area affected by the volcano Chaiten ? Looks like that even Montevideo, Uruguay is going to suffer the effects of the ash !!

Are close to the area affected by the volcano Chaiten ?

We passed through that area a couple of weeks ago. We are clear of the affected area.

It was a beautiful area with fantastic people.

It saddens us to see the devastation. We know from personal interaction and experience while in Argentina what the downwind effects of a volcano are to agriculture and ranching.

We feel fortunate to have experienced the area before it was altered by the volcano.

Market Town Saturday Night

We broke the rule.

We knew the rule. We knew it very well. It was kind of hard not to know the rule since we wrote it ourselves.

It is a simple rule. A just a few words rule. An easy to understand, easy to implement rule.

It has become a cardinal rule. A hard and fast rule. An under-no-circumstances-will-this-be-broken-rule.

Fuso Units

8 July 2008

Those of you who remember the post “How Big is Big” will remember that we try to express size in units other than arbitrary measures such as meters or feet.

Today’s example uses units of Fuso.

Yesterday we found something that was at least two Fuso units high. It made the Fuso look not so big.

Prior to departing for South America I collected a set of GPS waypoints from prior overlanders. They included service locations, fuel stops, points of interest and, most importantly, camp sites.

We like to find our own places, make our own discoveries and generally have our own adventure rather than follow exactly in others footsteps, but, when the sun is sinking and we need a safe, proven place to pull over for the night, the collection of waypoints has been invaluable.

Such was the case five days ago when we pulled into the little town of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile.
