Prior to departing for South America I collected a set of GPS waypoints from prior overlanders. They included service locations, fuel stops, points of interest and, most importantly, camp sites.

We like to find our own places, make our own discoveries and generally have our own adventure rather than follow exactly in others footsteps, but, when the sun is sinking and we need a safe, proven place to pull over for the night, the collection of waypoints has been invaluable.

Such was the case five days ago when we pulled into the little town of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile.

Just Ask

19 July 2008

10:15 AM
I was sitting at the table outside the gas station using their WiFi to finish our monthly finances when I first noticed it.

It was something on the underside of the truck. It looked like we picked up a branch somewhere and it hooked underneath with the end towards the back of the truck hanging down.

“Funny,” I thought. “Neither of us saw anything on our walk around yesterday morning before we left the beach. We weren’t in any brush there or since.”

I closed my laptop and walked out towards the truck. The closer I got, the more it did not look like a branch.

I reached the side, bent down and examined it.

No, it wasn’t a branch.

It was my worst nightmare.

Relative Humidity

7 July 2008

We crossed the border between Argentina and Chile at Chile Chico on 29 March 2008. We drove west until we hit the Carretera Austral and then turned left.

For the next 87 days we were in wet, foggy and chilly areas of Chile.

We spent a portion of that time in the rain forests of Chile, where annual precipitation is measured in meters, as in multiple meters of rain per year.

well done!

Hello,

Thanks for sharing all your intimate details of such a fine adventure. My wife and I honeymooned in Chile for two weeks, one week of "roughing it" ... backpacking in Torres Del Paine (as you pictured) and a week by bus/etc. from Tierra Del Fuego back to Santiago (and consequently, our jobs, LOL).

Keep up the wonderful documenting, it is a worthwhile time reading your humorous interpretation of the tribulations of overland travel:rockon:

Updated Route Map

I updated our route map to include our camp sites from 2008-04-20 to 2008-07-23.

To look at a particular area of our route use the zoom control in the upper left corner of the map. Click and drag on the map to position it.

To view information about a camp site, click on the Google Maps marker to open the info window. The info window includes lat/lon, comments and photos (if available).

To view a larger photo, click on the thumbnail.

Pasquale,

We will try to do so. We are here for a few more days, then off to the valley for MP, then plan to return here for a few days again. We will try to stop by and send along your greetings.

Doug
