Been in the alps for a week... had great weather, some nice trails, some good food&wine and some nice geocaches. Need this to get my head straight once a year...
Had some issues with the rear driveshaft, the leaf springs are showing their age (I took them over from the totalled blue XJ I had before), so it´s time for some upgrades...
First things first...
Horn, a company from Austria came out with new snorkels, cheap, well made (in China, me thinks) and even with the legal paperwork that is necessary nowadays over here. They were kind enough to send me one for testing - I´ll report back as soon as it´s mounted.
GKN, the world largest manufacturer of drive shafts, has a subsidiary just a few miles from the place I work. They made me a new heavy duty drive shaft - fitting my NV242 tranny and my Ford 8.8 axle.
The new alternator is installed, all related cabling was upgraded to 50mm².
A customer was in a hurry, so he got my Vision-X lightbar with 78x5W and I ordered me the new one with 90x5W.
The steering pump was replaced as well.
Ordered some new leaf springs, an AAL and shakle, more on that later.
I love that mudstuff console! How could I get one into the states? Fascinating build, I hear a lot about that plane in the Alps I guess it has a story behind it.
Just before our annual trip to the french alps it turned out that I had to replace the tranny and the transfer case - in the end (read: last minute work, including a 450 mile run through the night to get the right new tranny) it worked out and we could head to Briancon once again. The XJ performed flawlessly, I ripped apart the old synthetic winch rope and one of the exhaust mounts went south, but otherwise: no problems.
