I'm sure you are correct about the compression.

You're right, it doesn't sound like a big increase in displacement, but reliability is what you need and I agree leaving room for error/the future is a good call.

Now you need to start a thread with pics of your Dad's new mall crawler :)

The thread has been started in the Taco, 4Runner section...

What it's all about.

With the block at the machine shop still, all the parts cleaned and prepped to be reinstalled I thought I would get the 80 ready for the rear bumper install. . I pick it up friday from 4x4Labs. I'm driving the HJ45 over Donner Summit to get it :ylsmoke:

I ordered mine with dual spindles, so I can fab up the swing-outs for the dual tire carriers. I went this route instead of a jerry can holder due the fact that I also have to install the Long Ranger aux. fuel tank.

So, while I was in the garage my favorite person in the world cruises out to see if he can help me work on the cruiser. I say sure (trying to be cool), hand him the ratchet then slide him the creeper. I then sit back with a smile while my son removes the bolts I had loosened. I remind him to lay above or below the bolt he is working on, so debris won't fall into his eyes (Next time we'll get goggles out) a point soon illustrated. He then removed the fender flares. It kind of reminded me of the time I taught him to safety wire...a skill all six year olds should know. Haha

Make no mistake, for me this is what it's all about.

Good job being a good Dad J! :)

4x4 Labs only made the spindles, not the wing-a-way carriers too? Why not have them complete the job?

Nice! I remember hanging out in the garage with my Dad from about 5-years old. I'd hold the trouble light for him...

Thanks Amigo.

"Fab up" is probably a little misleading. I ordered his swing outs as a kit (weld yourself). I wanted to tweak some things on his tire carriers and play around with the positions.Add some little things to it that aren't there. He's already done the hard part.

Investment in you and your sons relationship now will pay off HUGE dividends down the road... for a lifetime!

I think my passion for vehicles didn't come from being around vehicles, but from being around my dad around vehicles.

Good on ya!

Road trip to the Laboratory

I took the HJ45 over Donner Summit and back yesterday (I had visions of the movie "The Gods must be Crazy" in my head. You know the part where they get out and walk while the lead vehicle is towing). In all honesty, it wasn't that bad. I topped the Summit at a mind blowing 55 mph. Woohoo! We are grabbing speed now! I don't know who was more shocked, the truckers I was passing or me.

Our Destination...To see the Mad Scientist at the Laboratory (Insert evil henchman laugh here).

In what was supposed to be a quick visit with Luke Porter at his shop, 4x4Labs turned into a half day event. There are some really cool things going on in his shop and he is a very busy man.

Our Mission...To pick up a rear bumper for "Sherman" (Yep, that's what I've named it). As in his green tank and the battle we have waged on each other since it I brought the thing home. I ordered Luke's bumper with two swing-outs, to be welded, assembled and powder coated by them. I splurged and had him do it as a treat for myself. With my motor rebuild and everything else going on, it feels good to look at something and get the immediate satisfaction of completing a project.

I did however elect to weld the tire carriers and hi-lift mount myself, so I would be able to "Tweak" some things. After all, I don't want to spoil myself too much.

Enough ramblings...

This is Luke's ride. It is a German spec HJ60 with a 1HDT Diesel motor. It has expeditioned all over the world and was bought from the German couple after their trip was completed in the US. It has crossed the Sahara.

That is the Toyota Stout pick-up. Coils, Mercedes Diesel conversion (Planned) Dana 80 in the rear. It was pretty cool to compare to the 45. The bed side rails are very closely matched, even the stampings on the firewall appear match up. Talk about "Son of the LandCruiser".

And Lastly, proof that the mission was complete. The rewards of the day sitting in my garage.

Looks great, nice cruisers at Lukes too! very

Thanks D- If I could fab like that trailer you did, I would have built my rear. A very impressive build. My favorite aspect was the track used on the body sides. Nice attention to detail.

Here's a few pics of the bumper mounted. Please forgive the rear flare. I have to notch it to accept the side guards. I'm pretty pleased with this bumper so far.
