The Josh's M416 Trailer Build

VanIsle_Greg

I think I need a bigger truck!
Looks really good man...and yes, I LOVE the POR15 too, amazing stuff. Are you going to use bedliner in the tub? If yes check out Monstaliner from Magnet Paints, great stuff and tintable too. If I were painting mine again I would do the whole tub inside and out with the stuff.

Loving where this is going.

Thank you! I coated the por 15 with classic coat black semi gloss but its a little too much brush strokes for my liking. I'm going to sand it down smooth and rattle can the sides so its a nice clean finish

Thanks for the tip on the monstaliner- that's the one I was kinda leaning towards based on what I read here

Completed some work on my trailer yesterday.

Welded up the spring perches on the axle then installed the electric brake hubs on the axle. Had to make a run to a trailer supply store because Summit Racing didn't send me the proper u bolts (3 were correct and identical and the 4th was way larger than the other)

Then after that the tongue took some work to get back into the frame, the tolerances were so close we had to use a ratchet strap to crank the tongue into the perches.

After that we installed the spider trax spacers then installed the wheels and then flipped the axle onto its own weight.

On thing I need to switch out the rancho 9000 shocks. I purchased a set that were made for a cj 3 but with the springs at full droop the shocks are pretty much completly compressed so they need to go

Next we bolted on the tub to start on the body work so once I start welding it will hold its shape. Ill probably start off on patching all the holes

But that's enough for the weekend :)

So what axle did you end up going with? Did you get your electric brake set up on it? I'm building a similar unit and am still deciding on the axle set up. Appreciate any data I can get!

Cheers!

I ended up going with a custom width Dexstar axle with electric brakes. I ordered it from a local shop to save on freight shipping the hubs are 6x5.5 to match my Toyota wheels

Could you share the specs? I think I have seen that those Dexter axles can also come with a mechanical parking brake along with the electric brakes...did you get that? Sorry for all the questions, I don't want to be stuck with the wrong axle when I do pull the trigger.

Cheers!

I couldn't find anything with a mechanical brake option. But with alerted brakes, we you pull the pin on the trailer the brakes will lock. It's pretty easy that way.

I got a 57" axle plus my hubs and i have spidertrax 1.25" spacers on each side since my wheels are hub centric.

my trailer is quite a ways from done but i thought i would mock it up and attach it to the trailer and see how it fits up and looks...

well i think it looks amazing!

i still have some body work to do then frame out the inside and top rail then cut in a tailgate. then wire up all the electrical and brakes but for now i just mocked up the new fenders and lid to get a idea how it is coming together. the frame sits at 30" from the ground which may seem high but its just a couple inches higher that the 4runner frame and it will come down a bit once weighed down with all the gear

so here is a bunch of pics

Josh:

Are you going to color match the tub with the toyota?
Wheels too or get matching?

I like the yellow build marks on the hitch bolts to see if the loosen.
Great build, I like the extended tongue just the right length.
Can't wit to see the finished product.
