The Mongrel: FJ62 body + FZJ80 chassis + turbo diesel + ???

Had/have a few things to fix on my FJ60 before I deliver the truck to the new owner. One is fix the fuel gauge that has been not working since last November. So I dropped the fuel tank. Turns out the float on the sending unit has broken off, somebody had tried to attach the float to the arm using some kind of expoxy and it has failed. Going to buy a generic float tomorrow and weld it on the sending unit/float arm. Sending unit is fine which is great for me! While I have the tank out I decided to go ahead and coat it with Rust Bullet. I am also going to coat the whole frame with Rust Bullet Automotive and than Blackshell.

Here is the LRA tank after the first coat of Rust Bullet automotive.

Here is the back of the frame after I pressure washed it, then washed it with Rust Bullet Metal Blast and then it got a wipe down with hot water/damp rag. I will hit it with Metal Blast again before I coat it with Rust Bullet and then topcoat with Blackshell.

This is my first time using Rust Bullet, so far I am really happy with it!

are your axle hubs compatible with the hutinson bead lock for the G wagon too (link troopy uses them)? good wheel to use to bring the tire into the body.

I already have Walker Evans beadlocks with 6" b/s. Can't run anymore then 6" of b/s. The axles are 8 on 6.5 and so are my wheels.

2nd coat of Rust Bullet on the LRA tank....

Crappy cell phone picture but you get the idea! I applied it 1st coat with a brush, 2nd with a roller. I like it better with a roller. I am happy with the results. The tank looks like new again. Will be trying it with a spray gun next time.

Ordered up last night the fuel tank float and a new 16" flex fan. I had a shroud made (my attempt at one failed) and the guy did a great job on the shroud. However, the fan touched it ever so slightly on bumps. Rather then re-work the shroud I am downsizing the fan from 17" to 16". It should work well since I have about 1/8-1/4" of clearance around the ring in the shroud with a 17" fan! This weekend I will finish off the frame with the Rust Bullet. It has been hit now 3x with Metal Blast and is ready to paint.

That is it for my FJ60 besides cleaning it and rounding up the spare parts. The last weekend of the month I will deliver it to the new owner in SLC, Utah and it is bye bye to this truck!

Here is a picture of the fan shroud I had made. It works great other than the touching issue.

BTW, saw this on another forum...

This is about what I am aiming for size wise on the truck. I will probably be a little taller and a little wider but this is about the just of what I am after.

That is one gorgeous troopy! I think he could have achieved the exact same stance by doing a spring over, but the portals definitely add some clearance. I look forward to seeing your progress!

Putting my new engine on a boat this week....ETA from Australia 2 months.

Errr, maybe I should say putting my old rusty truck with new engine on a boat! I am importing the whole 1984 Patrol donor vehicle, it is my shipping crate! :D

Shipping on new engine is paid for, ETA to Long Beach is 30 days! Four years in the making....

I am super stoked!

Purchased my shock towers, all my chassis link tabs and my rear axle coil buckets tonight.

Awesome build... Can't wait to see the end product, although from what I know about you, "getting there" is just as enjoyable as when your rig is finished.

I have a question slightly off topic... how hard would it be to do a straight swap of 60 body to 80 frame? Just curious...

Thank you!

Second part;

Not very hard. If you can't use a tape measure, a level, an angle finder, a mig welder, a sawzall, grinder with cutoff disc or plasma cutter then pretty hard. The 80-series wheel base is about 112", the 60-series is 107". There is a dude or two on Mud who did it with out modifying the wheelbase but it looks kind of funky to me. He has nicer approach and departure angles but again it looks funky to me and requires trimming rear wheel wells. To make it look good you need to shorten the wheelbase about 5". This requires chopping the frame and then welding it back together.

"MANUCHAO" aka Frank did it and he learned to weld while he did it. I personally think that is a true testament to the fact that anybody can do modifications like this!

Check out his build here...

Besides chopping the frame you have to make new body mounts or modify the stock 60/80 ones. It is not a project for the average guy/girl but if you have some confidence, brain cells, few tools and the will it is doable for way less than TLC or similar charges to do these mods/builds. Taking your goods out of your diesel Cruiser and swapping it into an 80-series chassis is going to cost a butt ton of cash at TLC, Profitts, Slee or elsewhere. Doing it yourself and you will save about 60-70% in build costs. All you really need is a donor truck, some tools and a place to work plus some time!

No offense to the shops mentioned, but this is the reality of paying for a build or doing it yourself. If you have no tools, no place to do the work and so forth the cost to do it yourself increases. However, in my mind money spent on tools and skills is always money well spent. :)

All up, shortening wheelbase and making new body mounts is the bulk of the work. You will also have to do up new engine/gear box mounts and or cross member. On top of this you have driveline work. In the end though doing it yourself will net less dollars spent!!

I'm looking forward to your finished product. I have recently fell in love with the 60 body style and coils or coil overs are all the rage now, for good reason. With a diesel on top of that you have the possibility for a wining combo.

I just lined up Odie (private shipper off of Pirate and Mud forums) to bring my 84 Patrol (new engine) up from Long Beach the weekend of the 15th. I will be picking up my brand spanking new engine the night of the 16th at a buddies house in Idaho.

I am super stoked!! :D
