The Mongrel: FJ62 body + FZJ80 chassis + turbo diesel + ???

You know I have had both, honestly I think the stock Jeep suspension worked better then the radius arm and the Rubicon Express lift in third place. The Patrol suspension should not even be put on the table it was designed for flex and crawling. You can drive mine anytime you like, it drives as good as the stock Jeep 4 link, and the 4 link works better off road. You can have the best of both worlds, to point, and I don't think you are going to cross that point this time.

I had forgot a bit about how your SAS was done. You use what looks very similar to the Cherokee radius arms. I like the 80-series design better and I have the 80-series stuff now. With the portals I really do not think ground clearance will be an issue! What it really just comes down to is wanting good or better road handling over a bunch of axle travel and flex. On a drive like I have done before I want to enjoy it not fight it. I really just want to get things in the shop and start playing before I decide but I got two trucks still to get out of the shop first! Almost done with work though for the season so soon I can focus full time on trucks.

cheers

Yeah, I remembered you were including the portals for your build after I wrote that. Since you got the 80 arms it makes sense to use them since you'll have the clearance anyway and they are pretty much zero maintenance, whereas I have to service my re-buildable joints periodically (just rebuilt/serviced them about a month ago). But I can tell you the Tacoma does drive pretty effortlessly over the long stretches from the east coast out west. The Currie anti-rock sway bars make a big contribution to that comfort.

So I got the Patrol sitting next to the 62 and figure it is a good time to take a few pictures. :)

I probably posted some of this before if not all of it. Oh well...

The 62 is actually 3-4", or even closer to 5" wider in the body than the Patrol. I can only get a rough measurement by myself! But the Cruiser is definitely wider. These pictures are with no wheel spacers and 13.5" wide tires on the Patrol. Previous pictures the Patrol was on 40x12.5's and had 2" wheel spacers. I don't like the 13.5 wide tires, I like skinnies and will be running a 12.5 but the 37's (13.5) are my "build" tires. It is looking really good width wise actually. I got approx 5" of tire sticking out on the Patrol body now. I will lose 1" in width from tires and gain 3-4+" in width on the Cruiser body. So this is putting me about 3-4" sticking out of the wheel wells on the Cruiser body when all said and done. That is not set in stone but is close. I am liking it any ways!!

A better view of width along the body, believe it or not this is only about 5" sticking out!

You got to admit, this rear axle is very sexy! How you like my lift blocks!? :hillbilly:

After a lot of measuring (for the 50th time!) it is looking like the Cruiser will be close to the ride height of the Patrol as it sits now. I am aiming to keep it as low as possible. If I can go lower than the Patrol sits now I will but I can also deal with the height of it as is. It looks like a 12" c/o and stock rear coils from the 80 will be pretty close to where the Patrol sits now. I think I have also decided to tame down my suspension plans a bit. Driven a buddies 80-series a few times recently and I like how it rides, a lot. Even off-road and flexing up on a medium sized rock was not bad. For me it comes down to the percentage of use where extreme articulation will be needed and that is a small percentage. Moreover, down the road on pavement over long distances, I want it just right without having to re-do **** a bunch of times. I also want high speed performance on washboard and like to be very good. Flex comes in at least 3rd on my list for suspension performance. Not sure if I mentioned it before but I have blown a seal in the portal box twice now. I am nearly positive it is because the portal box has no breather, oil gets hot and blows the seals. So I have plans to tap the portal box and add a breather line to it. The brakes on the Patrol/axles now work very good. Stop this 6,000lbs truck on a dime. So I won't be altering brakes much if at all. No idea if the Patrol m/c & m/v will bolt into the 62 but if they do I am likely keeping them. Both are brand new and from a GQ/Y60 Patrol, don't recall bore off the top of my head. I do have duel calipers on my rear axle, 2nd set for cutting brakes. Won't be using cutting brakes in the new build and I haven't decided if I will ditch the 2nd set of calipers or keep them for my e-brake.

stop this now....dammit. my mind can't handle any more ideas!

You have a very nice work space coming together . Great job on all the work. Can't wait to see how this rig turns out. It's a perfect recipe.

If that's treated lumber you won't have to worry about rot for a few years.....lag bolts would be good and maybe some carpenters glue just to be on the safe side!

The 84 Patrol donating the motor is in the shop! Time to work on pulling the motor and breaking down the truck.

Awesome project.

Do you have a dyno sheet for the motor? I'd love to see the torque curve.

After staring at the pics for 10 mins, I still can't get the hang of the turbo/supercharger setup.

i.e. I think it goes air intake -> Turbo -> Front mount inter-cooler -> Supercharger - > Top mount inter cooler - > motor.

is that right?

Are both the inter-coolers air-air?

How much boost are the turbo and supercharger adding?

Keep it up!

hey Dan, cutting up your post to make it a bit easier to reply to your questions...

Awesome project.

No but I will once it is all said and done. Brand new motor, don't want to rev it over 2500rpms until break in is complete, also don't want to play with the fuel until then too.

yes sir that is correct! Good eye...

Are both the inter-coolers air-air?

Yes

How much boost are the turbo and supercharger adding?

Have not had a boost gauge on it yet. But it is supposed to be at 20psi max. Stock the motor runs 11psi and we don't want to push it to much. The S/C gives boost from idle so no lag! It boosts together with the turbo once the turbo kicks in. I do have a hook up for in-cab boost controller on the motor.

Keep it up!

Thanks!

I should add I had this engine built for a different truck then the Mongrel or an overland vehicle. If doing it over I would probably skip at least a thing or two like, the shaved sump system. When the engine was purchased, the build conceived and planned and then executed the engine was going to go into a rock crawler, pretty much strictly a trailer queen truck. However things change, plans change and as such it is going into this hybrid of a truck. I think it will work out in the end especially since I won't be beating on the engine in this truck like I would in a crawler.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know this is one of the best build treads I have seen. I don't know that you could ever come up with a better combo than what you are putting together. I would love to drive over the hill sometime to see it.

Sorry none. Other than the motor is mounted to a stand now.

It has taken a back burner to these other builds...

The 64 isn't mine so isn't dependent on my "cash flow", the other one is mine so does depend on my cash flow. The 64 though takes priority. The 77 needs to get built for a number of reasons, space available for trucks being one of those. Once the 77 is fairly far along I will get into the Mongrel much more.

And cash flow is the big player here in terms of progress. To move forward with the Cruiser I need to buy front c/o's and rear shocks. I also need my trans + t-case in hand and my steering box plus a bunch of small stuff. I am also planning to replace the front axle housing, aka from Spidertrax. These are expensive items and until I got the cash I don't got them which means I really shouldn't move forward much. I jumped the gun early on thinking I could do this or that while I waited to get the other gear I need. I have decided that is a bad plan of attack. Before I set up suspension, axles and cut down the chassis I need to have the engine, trans & t-case mounted in the 80-series frame. Need the trans & t-case to do that! I am planning to get into the body and frame this summer though, maybe even spring. In the meantime, this project is idle.

Cheers
