The ultimate cargo slide/tray?

I've considered the front runner setup for several months now but I'm going to continue to wait in hopes that what you come up with is as nice as your previous projects.

This past Friday I was somewhere in South Carolina on I-95 on my way to Jekyll island in Georgia when I saw a black LJ with your safari top headed north. Any chance that was you? Love that safari top!

I've got a pretty good list of design points and requirements together thanks to the input from this thread. I'll be meeting with the RV slide company next Tuesday.

Yes, that was me, we were on our way back from Key West. I'm pretty sure mine is the only black Safari Cab, as far as I know none of the Gr8Tops production ones have been black, but mine is definitely the only LJ/TJ with the CJ Grille Kit. Took this photo in the Keys a few days before you saw us...

BTW if the company is interested I plan to do a test slide in this Jeep (I'll also test that slide in my trailers) and I'll do a test JK version.

Jeff do you have a definitive idea on the design(s) yet? When are you meeting with the rv company? Can't wait to see.

Donny,
Yes, I've got a design concept worked out and documented to discuss with the RV company. I'm meeting with them on Tuesday next week.

I'd like to see something like this.

These are the cub pack version of the South African Ammo Box (Wolf Packs).

That would toot my whistle too. I like Wolf Packs ---- you can stack them, sit on them, abuse them.
It's modular, it's simple, it's light.
Just wish they didn't cost so much. My Costco paks were just $6.37 each and hold more. You can stack the Costco paks but you can't sit on them.

Making custom plastic storage boxes isn't in my plan, but if there's a consensus on a good storage box I can make sure my design is sized to accommodate them.

Jeff,

I was not thinking about the storage boxes, just the slide style under them. The Cub Pack and Wolf Packs are readily available. Just a simple flat slide with raised edges would work perfectly. I have an LJ and built a platform just 9" above the deck. The cub packs are 8.3" tall. I think with an ultra flat slide, I could get four cub packs behind the rear seat and under the platform.

Got it, thanks. A low-as-possible slide-out tray is part of my plan. I'm thinking a modular approach, so perhaps the slides and the tray could be separate - if a special tray was needed, you'd get the slides only and make your own tray; if the standard tray was fine for your needs you could opt for that.

Last week I met with the RV slide company to discuss the slide idea as well as several other design ideas. I shared the design input from this thread with them, as well as an overview of the existing slides on the market and my view of what a desirable and competitive product would be. They reacted positively to all of that, so I proposed that the next step be that they analyze their current slide products to see what would best fit the requirements, and in doing so analyze the cost and possible market price. I told them this would be worth doing if they could offer a basic slide for meaningfully less than what's on the market today. They're doing that homework now.

I'll post updates in this thread when I have more info to post.

It's been a very long time since I started the design work on this project - both I and the company I wanted to work with on these have been very busy over the past few months. I've done about a half-dozen new JK hardware designs for them so that's taken our focus away from this project. Now that most of those other designs are either on the market or close to it, we can turn our attention back to this. Tomorrow UPS will be delivering a set of slides the company is sending me, so construction of the prototype cargo system can begin. Thanks again for all the input you guys have posted.
