+2 - Form follows function. One of the benefits of the Land Rover Defender as traveling vehicle are the vertical sides.

An issue with sloped sides is the resulting width of the sleeping area. On a full size pick up it may be sufficient, but not on a Taco or Frontier.

Jim

Didn't find any issue the sloping sides on my Wildernest, which was on a 1st gen Tacoma, just in it to sleep/change clothes...not to have a dance party. Two of
us did quite fine in it, actually had plenty of room on the mattress. Think of it more of a roof top tent you can stand up in than a pop-up like a four wheel camper. I really don't want to cook...or have a toilet in the camper...just basic sleeping quarters.

If it doesn't look like a camper in the first place when closed up...thief might walk on by.

Even though the Wildernest is a bit dated, you can barely tell it is camper, I would like to take it a couple steps further to modernize it.

I like the J 30 style pop up with a cab over. I camp a lot in the winter at ski resorts and would prefer the HARD SHELL roof to let snow sluff off. A traditional flip pac tent or up dated tent just wont hold a snow load of the Pacific Northwest and would be soaking wet all winter long. Total length of say 9' on a 6 1/2' bed. A 7' long sleeping area and a 2 1/2' area to climb down if someone was still in bed. After owning and using a RTT, climbing out a night to go the bathroom sucks. If the GF is not on the trip I use a Nalgene bottle. An optional "Cold Pack" curtain like a Four Wheel Camper would be great as well.

sounds like you're talking about a slide in camper...which really inflates the cost. isn't the Action Camper $50K+? what would a shell model be around
$20K?

XP Camper is building something similar to what you're referring to. Believe it is
called the V3.

Or the Durashell...think they start at $5000.

And then there is this.

Why go that far? A FWC shell would fit his stated desired requirements of a hard roof and longer than the truck bed.

funny I was thinking the same...why not get a shell model FWC?

or a Uro-Camper

all I want is a better flip pac/wildernest

it is looking like I am going to have to build it myself.

now if I can find one of these shells on the cheap...so I do not feel too bad when I cut it up.
basically do what Wildernest did, retro fit the pop-up portion to an existing topper.

found this, a guy had a new tent material sew up from Sunbrella I believe.

I tried contacting that guy a few months ago to see who did his tent work on the Wildernest.
I think I saw his for sale ad on the Longbeach Craigslist
I really dig the Wilderness design and your idea Kermit.
Make a couple. ;)

Thank you.

My girlfriend is an excellent seamstress, knows how to make dress patterns from scratch sort of thing, she has been wanting to buy a heavy duty sewing machine...

...so, I "think" I have a person to make the tent portion. ;)

We will see how the first one goes...

I like the wildernest design because it allows you to have a usable roof rack unlike the flip pac. Unless they could make an option to have the flippac open to the rear instead. But that would increase overall length to deploy. I also thought it might be cool to have one work like the popup tent campers, with a solid roof and then a popout to one side or the back and front. But that would probably add lots of weight.

Not quite, but that looks interesting. I was thinking more like having the solid top area pop up kinda like the ursa does then have a slide out bed on one side. If I get bored enough maybe I will make a drawing..

The idea would be to have a slide out on the side so it would also provide a shade or extra room underneath like some rtt. Or if you had a flippac that opened towards the rear you could do that as well. But i imagine with all the weight hanging of the back the truck might move alot with any little movement inside. Also this whole idea in my head would work for me, because I have a 4x4 dodge ram, so I would have standing room under any overhang. But this may not work on a truck that isnt so tall. I guess its hard to find that sweet mix of features and versatility to make it appealing to many different owners.

Getting warmer, I really like the bottom one. Something like that would be sweet on my old dodge
