There are a bunch of S&S LMTVs (cab-over 4x4 trucks) on Government Liquidation

Shocker

I tell ya, them are the coolest things, but with the question as to whether they can be used on road by civilians it is a crap shoot. I haven't been able to get an answer from the site folks. Would be cool if so.

Outside of emissions, CA don't care too much what you put on the road.

Easiest way if you have any difficulty in your state is put a camper permanently attached to the vehicle and register it as an RV.

There are 300+ units at BOSS Truck in the UK, I sent them an email seeking their price range, with and w/o shipping to the States. BOSS also has 3 UNIMOG Ambulance/Fire units. Cab's are Roll-caged.

Just be sure to check everything out carefully for your own situation. It's all well and good to be enthusiastic, but depending on who you are and where you live, there could be issues with one or more of the following:

  • Meeting emission regulations
  • Required diesel truck retrofitting
  • The class of driver's license required
  • Classification as a commercial vehicle
  • Titling the vehicle from the available paperwork
  • Large registration fees and/or taxes due to vehicle weight
  • Getting the truck insured
  • Homeowners' Association restrictions
  • Getting replacement parts
  • Whether your significant other can get into the cab
  • Whether you would want to slog this truck through stop-and-go traffic
  • Whether you would even want to drive this type of vehicle anywhere
  • Etc., etc., etc.

Why does everybody freak out the second a military vehicle, especially an awesome specimen like this, hits expedition portal? Go buy one, mod it out, insure it, register it as an RV and drive around the world. Nothing about these vehicles is any more outlandish than the hundreds of Unimogs that have graced the pages of this site. Go to Steel Soldiers. There will be hundreds of threads about the LMTVs soon as there have been hundreds flowing out of GL.

I don't think anyone is freaking out. Before anyone drops 20k on one, people should look at the possible issues. I see some guys on SS have bought them, but no info on licensing for civilian on road use.

And Mogs are a well known quantity as far as street use and licensing. These units are made in Austria and not approved for street use in the US and seeing as most were made in the late 90's, you run into the EPA and DOT regs.

I think you should follow your advice and see how it goes! Report back with a cool build thread!

Dammit someone stole the roof turrets off the trucks. Left with a gaping hole in the roof now. The miles are low but they are probably really hard ones with lots of idling, no hour meters to verify though. Being prior military and now a dod employee I would be real hard pressed to buy an ex-military vehicle.

Fair challenge! Unfortunately I prefer to stand from afar and gallantly let my friends take risks while my finances recover from opening three businesses. I will, soon enough, have a large ghastly build thread that may or may not involve an m916, m920 or m939 depending on how poorly my judgement is functioning at the time. But seriously, the LMTV/FMTV are netting between 6-14k on GL and should anybody want more complete information, they should go here and stop listening to me: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/forumdisplay.php?75-FMTV
