Thin Bedliner on Roof Section?

Viggen

Just here...
So, Im pulling my SG sliders, rear ladder and SD rack this weekend to strip, prime and seal with new, rust proof paint (going with Rustoleum black hammer finish for something tough, flexible and different). The roof panel is faded and a little stained from the rain water dripping through the floor on the rack so Ive been thinking about redoing the roof panel while I am there and my thought brings a love it of hate it reaction; a thinned bedliner coating. Its tough, stain resistant, scuff and scratch resistant, and acts a sound deadening also. It can be applied thinly too which is a huge plus and it comes in a tan shade which would look really cool with the blue paint on my truck.

Anyone done it or thought about it? I know its heavier than a coat of two of paint but the fact that bedliner will never, ever fade and will never stain as a result of the rack, is a selling point. Oh, did I mention is comes in tan :)

So, yea or nay?

In my opinion, dont waste your money putting the bedliner on the roof.

thinning it out is not that great of an idea but it depends on the product you use, a lot of them do not like to be thinned out.

another point is you need to spray it with a shutz gun as it is thick, the coating will be rough and will collect dirt and dust everytime you go get groceries let alone out in the bush. it just becomes hard to clean after a while.

sound deadening will not be that noticable unless you lay it on thick, even then, not very impressive at all.

some bedliners will fade, you get what you pay for.

the adhesion and scuff and sratch resistance has more to do with the preparation and what is underneath it for primer and paint or just bare metal, residual oil not cleaned off, etc.

i did mine but could have dome the same job with a good quality paint which you can touch up. it is not easy to touch up bedliner.

I don't believe the "it won't fade" people. I had Line-X in my last pickup. It had UV protectant, and it was warrantied against fading. After three years it was gray instead of black. I made them re-spray.

I have Herc-U-Liner on my CJ tub (in and under) and fenders, and Duplicolor on the rocker portion of my XJ.

They both fade, the more direct the sunlight, the worse the fade.

One nice thing, is both of them take paint really nice, whether spayed or 'rattle canned'.

One solution...

Now to my latest project. Problem, I live in Florida and in the summer here my Mica Grey truck gets VERY hot. The A/C takes forever (yes it is charged etc) to cool the truck, and on very hot days often runs on level 3 to keep it cool in the eat of the day (95+ degrees, 55%+ humidity). Often I would get in and sweat instantly, almost being in a panic to get the fan blowing etc.

I thought about taking a page from my grandfathers’ 1970 Landrover Tropical, which has a white rooftop AND a second roof panel that was elevated above the mail roof and let air circulate between the 2. the second roof panel proved to be too hard to make reliable at freeway speeds. Plan B, and taking a page from my 1970 FJ40 (RIP). How to do a white roof easily?

Well here it is. I went to a local media company who wraps cars. I had them wrap my roof, between the rain gutters, in a 3M 4mm White Laminate. They also wrapped my sunroof with a 3M 4mm thick Perforated White Laminate, both with a 3 year warranty. From the sides you cannot tell it has been done, from the front you can a little bit. In the heat of the day if you stand on the steps you MUST close your eyes because of the glare off the roof. The white panel is also noticeably cooler to the touch than the Mica Great piece outside the rain gutter. In the car, it is MUCH cooler and the A/C is now on a much lower level consistently. Even my ARB Fridge is much happier! I am pleasantly surprised at how much of a difference this has made. I would encourage all of your to do it, and it should cost you less than $300.
