Third member is going on my 01 4runner

:yikes: I think I need a third member quick.

Here are the symptoms...

There is a lot of friction in the rear end. It sounds and feels (vibration is shakes the whole car) like it is in the rear diff.
At just a couple miles an hour its harsh enough to halt the car and make a squeeking noise.
It would come on every couple of feet. About every revoltion of the tires.
The car will roll fine at idle speed in drive for a couple feet and then the rear end will bind up and bring it to a halt. I can overcome it by applying a little gas, but it doesn't feel good!
I rolled back and forth, in high 2wd, 4wd, low 4wd, center diff locked and unlocked and it does it in every scenario.

The weird part: after a bit I gave it some gas, okay a bit much, and it stopped. Completely. No more grinding, no more noise, or vibration. No leaks even at the time.
Now today a leak has developed where the pumpkin bolts together.

All in all, its obviously not good. I need a new third member. Preferably elocked while I'm replacing it, but I'll take anything. This is my daily driver and I need to get to work.

What gear ratio? 4.10 or 4.30? Is buying a new gear set and a setup kit an option?

tofer is parting out 3rd gen on ultimateyota.com

he has rear axle, i think its non elocked but he could get it to you for a decent price id assume.

Have you looked at the brakes yet?

If it was the 3rd member or bearings, I don't see how it would have quit making noise.

If the brakes get out of whak, it can come & go. Things like the little pins that hold the shoes to the backing plate. Etc.

Take the drums off, and see if the axle rotates freely.

4.10 gears.
just under 130k miles.
Thanks Neliconcept, I'll head over there and check it out.

Photog, will do. I took it up and rotated the tires and it seemed to be a faint sound in the diff, but I think pulling the rear drums and taking a look is the only way to be sure. I'm going to start doing it now. Thank you.

Thanks guys! I drained the fluid and it was black. (it was new mobil 1 gear oil about 3 months ago) There were little shavings and chunks in it. Its definately the gears or bearings in there.
I'm looking around for a good deal on an ARB third. Retrofitting in the elocker is too much work and there is no telling how it will interfere with the computer in mine since unlike the 99 and 00 runners it wasn't even an option in 01.
What places in AZ have good prices on arb's and installs. I can pull the third and the front, but don't know anything about setting them up.

The best prices online for the stuff is by far PORC www.performanceoffroadcenter.com

If you're in AZ, by far the best would be Zuk for setting them up.
http://www.gearinstalls.com/

Contact him referencing best places to buy, sometimes the best prices aren't the best product. I'm getting mine from http://www.justdifferentials.com/ because they're a reliable TLCA vendor. Good luck.

ZUK is great. I was at his house last night. The problem is that he won't work on the front diff. He just doesn't touch them...
So if I just want to get my diff back to stock open or with stock gearing and a locker he can do it. If I want to regear I need to take it somewhere else because the front would need gears too.
4Wheelers seems like a great place to go. Thats the 3rd time I've heard them mentioned by someone. I was also going to ask Scott so thats cool that he recommends them as well.

well something to think about, how about have MC or inchworm set you up a third and all you have to do is drop that one out and put the new one in.

of course you will need a compressor and might have to shave the walls of the diff housing due to huge side bearing caps.

What gear ratio are you looking for? I have a factory 4.30 R&P that was on my E-Locker. I was getting ready to sell. Your carrier will be fine just need new bearings.

As for setting up the wiring for a e-locker...that was easy. It was less work then wiring in a a ARB compressor.

A little trick. My local 4Wheel parts price matched PORC and saved me the shipping. Had me the Yukons overnight.

Very cool. Is your elocker hard wired completely independently of your truck? Or tied into the system like a factory elocker? (for me the biggest hassle of an elocker is modifying the housing. I gotta add holes where there are none and take away holes where there are, dent out the housing etc) The "perfect" set up would be finding an 00 or 99 runner to swap in the whole axle.

Good call on the price matching. I have personal issues/bad experiences with 4 Wheel parts so I do anything I can to avoid them, but I called up raceroffroad.com and they were willing to price match PORC which is great new for me.
