Yakima primarily owned by First national Bank of Islam!
CRAP! How long has that been going on? I bought my Yak gear 6-8 years ago. Don't need any more and won't get yakima now.

That's true, First Islamic Investment Bank E.C. to be precise. They own Yakima and WaterMark Paddlesports (i.e. Perception and Dagger) through a holding company called Destination Outdoors. I found this out after I bought some Yakima parts, which while I have always loved Yak racks, will be my last.

Holy Smokes!!! Why is this not better known. I would have opted for the odd ball design and poor craftsmanship of the Thule (Just having some fun with ya Nullifier! :sport_box) over the terror supporting Yaks. Crap - I just got mine about a month ago too....

Let's be politically correct and fair, we don't know that this investment group in Bahrain is a front funneling money anywhere. It might all be legit, I have no idea. BTW, they also own Caribou Coffee and Church's Fried Chicken, amongst other corporate, real estate and investments. Just surfing a bit here and found they changed their name to Arcapita. They seemed to have sold WaterMark boats.

I agree, it's like tarring everyone with the same brush.

Taking the idea of boycotting Yakima a step further, why not shy away from buying any petroleum product just in case it was produced in an Arab country. Proceeds from that sale may also have been siphoned off for "illegal" activities.

Just doesn't makes sense. There is a big difference between Islam and terrorism.

Well yes you are correct about not painting everyone with the same brush. But 2 things. First it is impossible to determine where the oil came from but chances are that is was from a country that hates us. So for that I have no ability to change my shoping until I can get a damn diesel powered truck that doesn't cost 40K.

Second the national sales manager of Perception that was incharge when 911 happened was let go a about amonth after 911. There were some dealers calling about the fact that the primary stock holder was First National Bank of Islam. If that knowledge became main stream it could realy have an impact on consumers. In order to address that issue he went to his boss to find out what the official stand point of Perception and all watermark companies would be. He was terminated the next day for asking the question. I thought it was a legit thing to do, but I guess The Bank didn't think so.

And lets also not forget that First National bank of islam was found to have money funneled through it that went ot legit Terror Groups.

Perception, Dagger, Harmony, and the rest of the Watermark paddlesports companies were sold a few years ago to Conflunce. THey are no longer owned by the Bank only Yakima at this point.

The sad thing was that in August at the outdoor retailer show My good friend Charlie who was head of Composite engineering at Bell Canoe came to the show with this book he made up of pictures that had been chopped, with Bin Laden and other know terrorists paddling watermark gear in the U.S., and how they Terrorists were going to over throw the country via the paddlesports market. The book quicklly became the underground hit of the show. Then the a few days after 9/11 Canoe and Kayak Magazine hit the stands with a cover story on paddling NYC had some kayaks on the water with the twin towers as the back drop. Cosmos was in effect!

Had 2 Yakima King Cobra bike racks mounted on my trailer. This photo shows the drivers side rack at the Rupert River Campground on the James Bay Road. The 2 bolts securing the aluminum extrusion have torn right through the bottom slot. This is while still on pavement, admittedly with killer frost-heaves. I was able to drill out the extrusion and use different fasteners to do a field repair. The other rack broke in the same spot before Chisasibi. Obviously a design flaw in this rack, that they pitched me on at REI.

Please point me in the direction to the documentation regarding Arcapita funneling money to these groups. I need new ski mounts this winter and would like to make an informed decision.

If you are using a Qtower type system the issue is not common to you. The way the old Q tower was designed it would tear the vinyl cover over the bar when tightening down. One it tore the Bars and towers would not no longer tighten properly. They redesigned the Q tower about 2 years ago and that is no longer a problem. It is now easier to set up and no longer tears up the vinyl cover over the crossbar.

My exact problem. I have been rolling the bars to get new vinyl to clamp on to, but I'm now out of roll...

Countries don't hate us and we don't hate countries. We may dislike the policies and actions of governments and they may dislike the policies and actions of the US government.

Countries are made up of diverse populations holding a variety of different views. So the population of a country can both support the views of it's government and also oppose the view. This happens in true democracies and totalitarian States.

I know that, I was just responding to a point.

Ouch it will be interesting to see if REI or Yakima stands behind them. Good Luck with that!

OMG I do not know if I can. I think I read it in an industry article as a story on Watermark. Islam Banks response was basically that they have no responsability for the actions of people moving money around to different accounts and who eventually ends up with the money. They were just a hub for the transactions to take place.

I guess that could be true but (damn this fly just keep buzzing my head for like the past ten minutes and is driving me crazy!!! hold on I must kill the SOB........ok that's better) I think in the hearts of most of us, weather you knew about it or not, your guilty by association. I will try to track down the article it is possible it is in my office somewhere still.

Yes.

Robert De Niro said it in the movie Ronin: "Whenever there is any doubt - there is no doubt."

We can become so open minded, so PC that soon we fail to stand for anything.

Regarding terrorism - if an islamic company is not doing a whole lot to publicly distance themselves from terrorists, that alone raises an eyebrow. To have a board member under investigation, well... see the above quote.

Sometimes things are black and white, and then one paint brush covers everything pretty well. I now regret my yak stuff...
