Time for new tires

Treadwright Guard Dogs in 265/75/16 with kedge grip.

I have about 10k on them, they are wearing well. For the price and performance they cant be beat. I will be replacing them with the same when it is time.

They are loud, but it isnt bad in the FJ.

I was on a trip from VA to WV on US rt 33 last Christmas during a snowstorm. If anyone knows that route, they know that is a scenic hair raising trip even in good conditions. In the snow/whiteout that night, there were times when i had to turn my lights off and drive by the parking lights (i know, i know, but I had to get home for the holidays). The tires performed so well during that trip in the sleet/snow/ice that I made my mind up that they were going to be my go-to tire from now on.

Well it's come down to the KM2's or the Cooper ST in a 255... decisions decisions...

Too bad it looks like cooper is discontinuing the ST according to their website. That's what made me go with the KM2.

Today I made the decision...

... New BFG MT KM2's in 255/85R16 going on as I type.

I almost went with the Cooper ST's and may still but for now I felt good about buying these

I think you'll like them. I have about 25-26k miles on ours, and still have quite a bit of tread left. They have pretty good road manners for an MT tire. While they are reasonably quiet when new, I am finding that as the tread wears down they get a bit noisier, but still not terribly objectionable. Pretty sure I will buy another set when the time comes.

Great price on the BFG's. We can't get Big O tires in Austin, but Maxxis makes 4 tires in the 255/85/16 size. Anyone have real wold experience on any of these? What's their true size? performance? It also looks like one is an actual all terrain tire.

I recently talked with the local tire shop that sells Coopers, and they said the S/T is being replaced with the S/T MAXX for everything accept the 255/85R16 and a couple other tall/skinny tires.

Me like them so far

I've had my duratracs for a few months now and have taken 400 mile trips dug in the mud and rode the sandy beach so for so good. It was a big deal for me to give up on running the standard BFG MTs but went looking for a quieter on road ride and better road performance without giving up totally on driving in the mud since I'm on the east coast I'm dealing with mud of some kind most of the time. I hope you like yours as much as I like mine. So I guess my vote would be for the duratracs.

I have heard that the KM2s are not performing well... and the Goodyear MT Kevlars are on a national backorder for at least 6 weeks.
So I opted for the Goodyear DuraTrac (285/75 R16).

I just mounted them during the Thanksgiving break... so I have zero real experience with them.
But what I have read, they are great tires... same if not better than the AT's from BFG.

I have the fortune of being able to try many types of tires due to my work in Forestry. We had the shop manager put Goodyear Duratracks on one of the diesel crew cabs and Kelly Safari TSR's on another one of the GMC Diesel Crewcabs. Ran them for a summer and compared. The Best tire we have found for the dollar is the Kelly Safari TSR - less expensive then any tire posted here and aggresive all terrain tire. Has the sizes you want, lots of sipping, drilled for studs, side wall grippers, open block design but quite on the highway (not sure how they did that). Can be purchased at any Fountain Tire as Kelly Tires is a Goodyear company.

The second best tire we found compared to any thing else was the Dura Tracks. Second simply due to how quick they wear and the amount of flats that occured compared to the Safari TSR. Both seem to be equal in the mud possibly a slight advatage to the Duratrack due to the more open block on the outer edge of the tires. So in the end I run Goodyear Duratracks on my Cruiser in the winter (Extra line of studs down the center) and studded Kelly Safri TSR's on my Tacoma work truck in the winter.

Either one will make you happy. We switched to the Kelly Safari TSR over the Duratrack due to % 35 less per tire, a easy 15,000 km's more per tire tread life & less flats.....way less flats. The Duratrack though I feal is a better winter tire when studded then the Safri TSR. Summer time I run 35" tall BFG MT's on the Tacoma & Cruiser.

UCA clearance

I run 285/75-16 MTs on stock '09 Tacoma TRD rims. About 5 1/4" backspace I think. They definitely rub on the UCAs, and I have Camburg UCAs. To get enough clearance I run 1 1/4" Spidertrax spacers. Zero trouble with the spacers under any circumstances, even highway.

I recently bought a set of these rims off an '02 Taco:

These are Taco/4Runner/Tundra wheels. They have 4 1/2" backspace. I'll run my MTs on these rims and narrower ATs or something less aggressive on the TRD rims. These rims are available on Craigslist all the time, generally for way less money than new rims with 4.5" backspace. As I'm cheap, this is a good thing. Hope this info helps someone.

I can't convince myself to buy treadwrights. link Too much precious cargo in my rig. I think I'm going Duratrac to switch it up from BFG's. (or may still stick to BFG's).
