Toyo OPEN COUNTRY A/T II

Expedition Leader
285/75 R18 Toyo AT2

Installed: Nov 2012
Current photo taken today (July 26 2015)
Tread depth as measured in the middle section of blocks today: 6.5mm (~8/32")
Tread depth new (per Toyo): 17/32"
Total miles driven as of today: 24,186 miles

They suck in the mud; but this was expected given tread style, void and tread depth. Otherwise good performance for general on/off road use. This set has been a little more problematic to balance for all speed ranges (up to ~80mph) though. Discount Tire could never get them to balance perfectly...even when they were brand new.

Although the 3 sets of GY MT/R Kevlar I ran in the same size had weaker sidewalls...I was able to get 32k miles out of them...not bad for MT and me. I expected better tread life/wear on the AT2s. Having said that this set of AT2 tires is better in the tread wear department than the 2 sets of Toyo AT I ran previously. So yes Toyo has improved the tread wear but doesn't look like these will quite go to their promised 50k miles.

Last time I checked, earlier this year, Discount Tire said I did not qualify for tread wear pro-ration under the Toyo guarantee. Will have them check again this week as its time to rotate and re-balance.

Ive got a few thousand miles on my set now.

So far these are hands down the quietest and smoothest riding tire this truck has ever seen.

Very impressed at this point at its road manners, and grip off the pavement.

We shall see how they wear rolling at 10k lbs most of the time.

Bumping this one up. Now that you have likely had some experience with them this winter, what's your assessment? How do they handle the snow?

I live in Michigan and have had them on for 2 winters. They do pretty good in the snow for an AT. I am very happy with the wear too.

Impressed would be an understatement.:ylsmoke:

We put another 5k on them during winter travels, and put them through their paces.

They did FANTASTIC on ice, hardpack, as well as pushing thru 10-12 inches of snow on occasion.

not missing my dedicated winter tires one bit!

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it.

Awesome, thanks! I think I'm going to give these a shot, though it's tough for me to stray from BFG. I had the AT/KO on 3 different vehicles and would probably be happy with the AT/KO2, but I still like to try different tires from time to time as well.

I wouldnt sweat it.

Ive had the original AT/KO, years and years ago, on more than a few vehicles.

The AT2 are FAR better in the snow and on hard pack than I remember the AT/KO's ever being.

Your welcome.

Be prepared to be impressed.

They are by far the best tire Ive had, right out of the box.

With a big truck, Ive always associated brand new tires with wondering treads. Even the BFG AT/KO did this.

The AT2, not so. They are 100% from day 1 :ylsmoke:

Had the AT2s installed on my Tacoma today, 265/75R16 load range C tires. I was able to get out for a couple hour drive this afternoon, primarily highway but mixed with some forest service roads as well. Conditions ranged from dry pavement, to water-saturated decomposed granite roads, to warm snow about 6-12" deep in areas. I enjoyed the tires this trip, but a lot can be related to new shoe syndrome.

These replaced 235/86R16 BFG AT KOs with about 50k miles on them. The BFGs were getting rough and loud at their old age, so the smooth and quite Toyos were a welcome change (as would have been any tires, I'm sure). Some observations, I noticed a high pitched whine on the highway at 60-80mph, but it wasn't annoying. It was just louder than I expected based on the docile tread pattern. Also, turning felt a bit heavier around town, but it could have been my imagination.

The forecast is calling for snow Tuesday, so I'm looking forward to my commute from the mountains down into the city (or back, depending on when the flakes actually fall).

Thanks again for the input in this thread, I'll try to post up periodically with my impressions.

I woke up to 8-10" of fresh snow this morning for my commute. Compared to my admittedly worn but not worn out BFG AT-KO tires, these were like I was driving on velcro. I even came to a stop in morning rush hour traffic on an iced over bridge while in 2wd without any issues. On the highway, at speed, these held well and were definitely confidence inspiring. While I realize they don't have the mountain snowflake symbol, and they can't hold a candle to dedicated winter tires, they were more than passable. Hopefully they hold up for next winter as well.

I went today to purchase a set of AT2's today but they are on national backorder. Had the 285/75R17 on my previous truck and I want to put 305/70R17's on my current truck. I guess I'll be waiting awhile.
