Toyota Question!!

I am looking into the toy converstion for my rover. What is required is a a rear 3rd from a V6 toy and up front I need a high pinion 8" diff from a 80 series Land cruiser.

With these I want to run 4.88:1 gears.....

So my question is how hard are these to come by and how much $$$$ am I looking at?

You can buy pre-built ones starting at ~$800 & up... otherwise source the cores (~$150-350 each) and add gears & install kits (~$250/3rd).

The rear will be the easiest to find, though the front shouldn't be too bad. Your looking for a 90-97' FJ/FZJ80, with the possibility of e-lockers in the later years (~94-97'). Of course you could always run a Taco/4Runner TRD E-locker in the rear too... dual lockers on the cheap . You can score the rear Taco era lockers for ~$450-$650 used, add some gears and your set.

Yes, it was an option in 94-97' make sure you verify before buying from an unknown seller (some have no clue what an e-locker is).

When I said "core" I was referring to used thirds that you would purchase, and then add new gears and an install kit.

Where to buy? That the million dollar question, check Toyota specific shops, wrecking-yards, forum classifieds, etc

Whoops I see where I misunderstood now!! Thanks for the info! So if I find a 94 - 97 FJ 80 that will house both the diffs as long as it is a V6 right?

I believe you have a few things confused. On your first post you mentioned a v6 diff and Toyota pickup.

Now an FJ80 has come into the post, and the FJ80 has a different 3rd for the rear than the pickups and 4runners, while the front 3rd on an FJ80 WILL bolt into a 4runner or mini truck solid front axle of the 8" variety.

If you want a hi pinion 3rd, find an FJ or FZJ80 - the rear of the 80 series cruisers uses a 9.5" 3rd, if I remember correctly.

To source a v6/turbo 3rd - these are found in the 86 and 87 Toyota p/u's OR more commonly found in 90-95 v6 pickups OR 4runners.

**Stay away from the 4runners that came w/ the v6 and auto tranny w/ the 31" tire package - those diffs are 4.88s and not compatible for gear changes.

...and, an FZJ80 rear/front end that did not come with the locker from the factory will need to have the carrier modified to fit a factory e-locker....it'd be easier just to get one with the locker to start with...

Ok, you should have no problem finding a used v6 3rd member and Hi-pinion 8" 3rd.

First, read this page thoroughly, so you understand all the differences between the differentials Toyota offered and where they can be found -

If you are looking used, search pirate4x4, wildyoats, colorado4x4.org or your local craigslist for v6 toyota 3rd members. Ebay is a good option as well. These diffs were available in many different vehicles.

Rear 'v6' diff:
88-95 Toyota 4runners/Pickups with v6 (you don't want diffs w/ factory 4.88 gears though)
86-87 Toyota pickup TURBO 22RTE had the v6 diffs too

Front HP 3rd:
The HP diff will come from an 80 series Landcruiser front axle. 91-97 years...

Of course you can buy these new, fully setup w/ lockers and gears of your choice from Marlincrawler or All Pro.

I've never heard of anyone retrofitting the OE Locker carrier into a non-locked housing... short of alot of custom machine work and waaaay too much work & $$$, it can't be done. Either get one with the E-Locker setup or plan to do something different ie. ARB's.

How set are you on 4.88's?

4.88 was never a factory option on a e-locker. 4.56 was in a low pinion and you can pick up brand new factory set up lockers for around $1k shipped. Toyota of dallas cuts good deals.

High pinion can be bought with gears for under $1k BUT you will need to regear for anything but 4.10.

Regearing a Toy is not that hard. www.gearinstalls.com He's the man with the plan. Tips on that site and the install instructions that come with Yukon gear and you are set. Get Yukon gears for sure.

If you watch sites like Ih8mud.com, Pirate4x4.com and TORRA site you can occasionally score one. Just check the locking collar. These lockers have to be in the locked position to remove from the housing and if they are not and they are pryed out the collar is sometimes damaged.

I traded as set of 35's from my last truck that I decided not to use for mine.$200 for gears and a few bucks for parts to make the controller. Works GREAT.

My control circuit is more like the second link but I added in the progress lights from the first link. That way you know when it is still locking or unlocking and once it fully unlocks all the lights turn off. and you are SURE its is unlocked.

Can't say I know a whole lot about yota diffs in rovers, but Keith at rovertracks offers a kit to put them in. From the template to drill out your housing to the whole assy, to just a good word on how to do it. He is revor on the portal.
