TrekboxX drawer system for JK idea thread

I'll try to post a few pics tonight. I'm trying to use the daylight wisely, since my time with a Jeep in the shop is limited...

Have no plans yet, unfortunately, to attend. All of my time off from my regular job is being spent on building/designing and taking care of my little ones.

So, as I said there will be (at least) 2 systems for the JKU. One is an Alpha System, very much like the one on my website for the Land Cruiser except it has been designed to be lighter, yadda yadda. The pic below is just a representation of what it will look like. The other system, the one I'm building first (because the fine gentleman who loaned me his Jeep want this one) will be a single wide drawer. The wings are quick-detach and there is an optional sleeping platform than locks on top of the system. Optionally, you could travel with the 2nd row folded and the platform extended for more storage options. Once at camp, the "kicker" folds down to offer a full 70 1/2" x 37 3/4" sleeping platform. For these new systems I've switched to Knape & Vogt slides for their locking mechanism. It has allowed me to add a custom handle so opening and closing the drawer is as easy as pulling or pushing the handle. Please excuse the tolerances in the pics- I'm still tweaking and I have to allow room for Line-X. The shelf above will be an optional item.

Not sure why the first pic is sideways, but you get the idea...

I LOVE the K&V Concept. Much easier and cleaner than the large complicated latch systems out there. Will this be applied to future versions for the 100 series as well?

Looks very nice. Very, very similar to my sleeping platform design from last year. Mine had two sets of sliders, allowing the top to slide forward for unfolding OR accessing the factory recessed storage. Does your sleeping platform just rest on top of the box when not in use or does it latch into the latches that hold the wings? Really like the design, I'm amazed how similar our designs are, depending on how you price it I may just skip building and buy yours. Looks great!

I'm not 100% sure I follow what you're doing there, but I think I get the basic idea. Just be careful to have lateral support for the box when your top is slid away...

The sleeping platform docks on the top of the system using a separate latching mechanism, or it can be removed altogether. The wings are quick-disconnect and would be removed when the platform is stowed. They can, however, be in use with the platform deployed.

I've added a video to demonstrate my idea. it's an older video, ignore the speaker box, I've decided to go a different route with that.

Could he wings be mounted on hinges so they can act as two odd shaped storage area? Are they only flush when the sleeping platform is installed?

They are flush when installed. And yes, they open for use of the space underneath, albeit small.

Yeah, been working hard on finishing the prototype and converting into CAD. Working with my metal fabricator to design/make all of the new metal parts needed for the sleeping platform mechanisms. They will be cut on a high-definition CNC plasma and then powder coated. I'm hopeful I'll have the main system over to Line X in a week or so. I'm also finalizing the design for the optional shelf above that will also attach to the fridge barriers on the Alpha model. It's been a ton of work. The floor in the Jeep is anything but flat, and the entire system needs to be tilted up at the front if you go with the sleeping platform option so the kicker can clear the center console. Spent 2 full days just working out the angles and getting all the shims just right.

Yuman- sorry, I never answered you about using the new slides on the Land Cruiser systems. I'm not sure just yet. I actually have already done most of a re-design to lighten the system up a bit, but I'm not convinced the weight savings is worth the cost of a full changeover. My customers who have the existing system love it, so I'm not sure that saving 30-40 lbs (total guess at this point) is going to bring a whole new set of potential clients. If LC guys were counting ounces they probably wouldn't put a 200 lb tent on the roof when a 5 lb tent works just fine. We'll see. If I get asked for it enough then I may. The very few people who have complained about the weight so far are people who would probably never purchase one anyways.

Looks like a top quality system for sure! It looks like you spent a lot of time making the box fit like a puzzle piece to the factory plastic trim. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the 11+ interior has completely different plastic trim than the 07-10 models. In fact, it has a lot more trim than earlier models. Probably too late in the game to suggest this but I would think you could gain a few inches and simplify the design if you just removed all of the factory plastic trim from the rear of the Jeep and designed your systems to just use the actual tub space. Maybe an idea for the 2 door systems in the future.

No, that hasn't been mentioned, thank you. Do you have any pics of the 07-10 cargo area? I wasn't aware that they were different. Not good. The problem I see with designing the system without the plastic is that it would force it's removal. There are (I imagine) many folks that want to keep the plastic in to protect the paint and keep a clean look.

Thoughts?

Well, If I invest in this type of system, I wouldn't have a problem removing all the trim from the cargo area. I'm just not convinced there is that much (a few inches) functional drawer space to be gained between the trim and tub. Also, the wings you have designed give a nice finished appearance, but not sure I would use those either... looks like valuable stuff space to me :)
