Moving along as usual, BVan engine work is done so we refreshed the front axle and cleaned everything up. Still bolting things to the 7.3 SMB but I couldn't wait any longer to put it on the ground.

Forgot to post this pic, our 1st (small) run of pass side lower u-bolt plates for DeQuig jobs. Makes to easier and returns the axle back to its original form as long as the Q van has a 99-04 style axle. Oice this is welded on we can use our standard u bolt plates/trac bar kit as well as a truck sway bar. No more custom u-bolt plates and the whole conversion is now easier for the DIY guys.

Front bumper is on, this is the 1st for us with the square holes for Rigid Dually's. Looks great. Should be driving this rig in the AM!

Brain pickin time Chris!

My front axle came out of a 2003 F250 that had 4 wheel ABS brakes. Since I wont be making use of the front ABS can I replace the unit bearings with the rear wheel ABS only versions?

Speaking of unit bearings. Is there a good way to check to see if they are good or not from the donor axle?

I have read a lot about greasing and replacing the needle bearing, as well as greasing through the abs port. But besides visually inspecting the needle bearing, is there any way to know if they are going bad or not?

How often do these things go bad? I know when they go south they can take the brakes and axle shafts with them so I dont want to take any unnecessary risks. And they are ~$200 each.

It's tough without a wheel bolted to it. And even with, you need 2 guys to see what is moving (ball joints or trac bar) It's usually a good or bad thing, they normally go without much notice. Lifespan depends on the quality of the bearing, what I use costs ~$300 each. You can get cheap ones for as low as $150 now but I stay away from them.
