while they can get things fixed in the field with a paper clip and some swearing over there, they do love reliable(well, power train wise)

stuff so if it holds up to the abuse(abuse understated), you may indeed see more :)

Chris,

It's late at night and I'm not going to text you plus I will forget in the morning to mention it so I'll do it here.

Cannot wait to get into the new Van with the Cummins and your full conversion package !!!!
Cannot come fast enough.

I don't know what shocks you are planning on putting on my CopesCobra conversion.
....

Thanks Jeff

Hi,

I dont want to guide the ujoint thread off topic but I dont get it: what is the huge advantage of a 12v Cummins?
I know their image is great, they are very reliable and have a lot of power -but is the differece in reliability that much better than a 7.3 psd? If electronic is not an issue I guess a 6.4 is a great engine compromize between huge power, efficiency and better reliability than stock 6.0.

I think the 6.4 is too big to fit in the E-350, and it has it's own issues. Might as well keep the 6.0 and eliminate the problem areas. I'll let Chris address the why's of this particular 12v Cummins swap, but in many cases the answer is "because we can."

Simple, reliable, good power and no electronics are the main reasons that everyone wants a 12V. The 7.3 is a great motor too, I think they're about the same as far as durability.

And yes, we're doing it to try something new!

12 v cummins are insanely durable and reliable and very easy to work on. I work in a boat yard were just about every other boat we get in there is a cummins 12v and they last alot longer than most other engines. Especially the 6.0 and 6.4.which are way too complicated. Expedition travel and ocean cruising is about having something you can fix in the field. The 12v you can fix in the field alot easier than a 6.0L power stroke let me tell you after being stranded in Baja Mexico for a week after getting a buddy to come down with parts.( Stc fitting on the high pressure oil pump and a short in the cam shaft positioner sensor. Not Fun. I ll now shut up about the 12v. ps. I am a big advocate of a 12v.

Ok, that's what I had in mind, reliability. That was my reason to by my magirus deutz years ago, by planning to travel to Africa from central Europe. Meanwhile globalisation is so strong that a broken transfer case for a rover 110 took just 2 days in marocco.

Still finalizing RussiaVan, here's a shot of the Sterling 10.5 rear with a Grizzly Locker and 4.56's.

And a very messy engine bay! Just got the dead 7.3 out, LOTS of cleaning the rest of the week!

And here I was thinking the 7.3 were immortals... ;)

Nice work as usual, and congrats on the little one!

I was lucky enough to see the Russia Van in person - it looks mean as hell!
