Yo folks - I see that you are in Ethiopia now.
Are you heading down to Kenya?
I just signed on to the Expedition Portal ... so I am just taking a look at your trip notes.
I've done a lot of driving around Kenya - so if you get down that way and want some
advice I can probably pass on a few tips.

Have fun and don't get carjacked in Africa.
If you do run into bad guys with weapons - just give them what they want.

good luck,
Kiwi-Yank

Nope.. On our way north. Found some beautiful routes in Kenya though. Great country for 4x4 exploring. Saw a few people carrying guns in the northern parts, but we've had no problems what so ever. Have spent 9 months in Africa by now, and we find people to be very friendly (only problem is begging).
Thanks for commenting!

Visa waiting in Addid Ababa

8786127982_ce95b4ffa2_o.jpg

Our stay in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, turned out to last a little bit longer than we had planned. The visa we were told could just be “collected” at the embassy actually took us 10 days to process. Good thing we’re not on a two weeks holiday…

Fortunately, Addis Ababa is a very nice city. Because we were only staying for a couple of days we splurged and checked in to a nice room in a mid-range hotel, the Itegue Taitu Hotel.

The standards for electrical Appliances are a bit different than what we are used to in Europe though...

Around the corner we stumbled upon Café Oslo, and of course this became our favorite breakfast and coffee place. Here digging into a Fetira with egg and honey. Delicious!

One of the most famous Africans in the whole world can be visited in Addis Ababa. Lucky for us, she was just back in town from a world tour, and the museum arranged for a special exhibition: “Lucy comes home”.

Lucy is one of the earliest humans (Australopitechus afarensis) we know about, and she walked around in Ethiopia about 3,2 million years ago.

We were not the only ones looking for visas to Sudan in Addis Ababa. The days of waiting was actually quite social, and we had a lot of fun together with other overlanders.

For one American it took four weeks to arrange for the visa! It turned out to be easier for us though, and soon we were on the road again on our way to see the churches of Lalibela. If we can navigate Our way out of town, that is.... Traffic laws are totaly ignored!

Love Addis! Splurge and have a pastry and coffee in the lobby of the Sheraton Addis. Not cheap, but lots of fun and interesting people watching. And don't forget Faskika for dinner and dancing.

Awesome!

it may be too late, but once you get in Sudan and drive up to the ferry, you can still take the old road in the desert. that's what we did, by accident...not knowing that there was a new paved road.

it's a lot more fun!

I will repeat my earlier comments that i appreciate you sharing these journeys with us and that i'm always intrigued.

On a side note, i traveled for the first time in my life out side of the US last year. There were many things that stand out about the trip but one thing is that i rarely saw obese people! Not trying to be political or anything, but through all of these threads and all these pictures, you rarely see obesity the way we have it in the US. Really opens your eyes to the problems we have in the US.

I wouldn't say that's political at all. It's a cultural issue. Republicans, democrats, libertarians, all of them have the problem. It's a sad thing.

Even in Italy where you would expect great big ol' chefs serving heaping plates of spaghetti, there isn't that much obesity.

Italy they eat tons of Pasta but the way the Pasta is made is far different than the junk we have over here in North America. That's why despite their eating habits they stay slim to moderate.

Yes, Addis is definitely one of the nicer cities in Eastern Africa. We didn't go to the Sheraton though, but we did our splurging in Gonder at Four Seasons Restaurant and got a fantastic dinner and dansing there. Ethiopia has been a highlight in Africa so far. Pictures to explain what I mean is coming!

Christian: We are debating just now which way to go. I want the more adventurouss drive along the old railway, but Malin wants to see the ruins and the archeological sites along the Nile... Still to be decided :)

This is very true. Obesity is non-existing in rural areas, and this has been the case for ALL countries we've visited except North America and Europe. In Africa you can see this in the big cities, but its rare. Funny enough, it seems some of the senior police and custom officials struggle more with over weight than others.....
