Upper Peninsula Overland Adventure Weekend August 23rd-24th

We're back from CA on October 12th. I'll have a ton of work to do but could manage a few days I'm sure.

Winter runs are an all around bad idea. One snowmobiler with 2 (now foreign) Bud Lights in him smacks a truck and we'd be done forever. In winter everything is literally impossible to wheel. Maybe a mog.

Maybe EARLY season in the snow with a good ground freeze.
But...BRRRRR.

Angie and I would like to go back up in October as well. I'm only open till the 18th, though, as I'm off to Ontario for deer hunting on the 19th.

We'd like to see the mine, the ghost town at Pequaming (sic) and the NASA test site. Of course, more trails and I'd like to see gay beach from end to end.

Anyone interested in doing a winter run? I don't know which trails would be navigable, but I was thinking snowshoeing, ice climbing, etc... would be fun. There are cabins available through the DNR at Harlow Lake that would make a great base camp. Anyway, just brainstorming. Take care, Ian

We swung through Pequiming on Monday. It is really quite built up some now. The book I got a story about it from is @ 30 years old. I can find another ghosttown though. I know a couple really good ones down here in the LP. If we went to Copper Harbor, Mandan would be a good stop.

A short story: On our way to Big Mac, I realized we still had some firewood. "Hey, lets swing through the state park in St. Iggy and give it away." On our way through Tracie mentioned we should sympathize with a tenter. We drove a bit and found a guy walking around his campsite. We asked and he greatly accepted. We started talking to the guy some. Turns out he and a friend have BICYCLED from San Deigo CA, up to Wash./Oregon and across and are heading to Bar Harbor, Maine. They have 8 weeks to do it. Wow thats a ride!!

I know we would not be able to make a winter run. The move will keep us busy (and semi-poor) for quite a while.

Yeah, It may be hard to wheel in the snow. I'd still like to get out snowshoeing, ice climbing and winter camping. When it gets closer, I'll set something up. Maybe Jan- Feb. -Ian

And if anyone wants anything sooner, I'm heading over to Isle Royal Saturday to backpack for three days. CANNOT wait! Yeah, kind of short notice I know.

I'll be home from December 18th-28th, so maybe we could do a little outing. Its nice because there isn't too much snow by then, usually. The snow is usually pretty soft to the bottom which makes it easier to drive in vs the stuff that has a crust or hard layers at the bottom that give a false sense of security right before you break through and bury it to the frame.

Tom, you driving the Troopy in the winter as a DD? I take my 80 off the roads for the salt season.

Kristian,
What is the longest you have stayed in one place? I have a feeling it could be measured in minutes! j/k

I might get a couple vids up on youtube this afternoon.

When the Eco Roamer and I got ahead of you guys on Saturday and were sitting at that gas station on the res, I talked to this guy who was riding from coast to coast. He was riding solo, with a trailer off his bike and a load of gear. He was making a 2 year trip out of it and zigzaggin north and south a ton. The funny part about the whole thing was that in little kennels he had 5 cats with him! I've never seen anything like that. I do see quite alot of xcontinent riders come through this way in the summer but never with animals in tow.

Interesting...perhaps a LP fall ghost town activity is in order?

Ha ha, why do you think its been taking me so long to build this damn garage! I did manage to get the gable overhangs on and the fascia yesterday along with the rest of the siding, then got the sheeting on yesterday. Its raining today but all I need to do now is felt paper and shingles to get it dried in. Coming down to the wire!

I know the feeling man. Just helped re-roof our garage and we're finishing up a pole barn before season change.

I'd offer my help but don't know if I'd have the time. I do have to bring your tire back though....

Nice! I'm glad they had a good time. What are you getting for a RTT? BTW, nice pics, the morning sunrise is my new desktop.

Are you thinking Keweenaw? I could be pretty happy spending a couple of days up there, I'm going to bring my mountainbike though as the Copper Harbor trails are sick.

keweenaw or pictured rocks, maybe porkies?

Mombasa, not total expedition quality but plenty good enough for the casual stuff we do.

I high centered my 100 on the road into my camp this spring by breaking through that false crust. It was sitting on the frame and all four wheels were spinning in the air. :(
