Ursa Minor Pop-Top Jeep JK

We sleep in our vehicles and always have to make something DIY for bugs and venting. I love the sliders with screens! Thank you. This will be a great addition to the J-30. (still saving my pennies.)

There's mesh nets you can get that slid over the upper part of the doors and go down past the windows. Then you can just lower the windows as much/little as you need, and bugs can't get in.

Just an update, we now offer opening rear quarter windows as an option for our Jeep campers. If you, your kids or your dogs may be sleeping "downstairs" or if one needs a little more air flow on the road, this might be just the solution. These are half sliders, with the rear opening screened off. Pricing is $350 per side, we install for free in your camper - just let us know when ordering.

Of course, if you have a 2007-2010 OEM Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Hard Top, these will also fit.

Maybe I misunderstood, but when we talked at OVX '13 in person, and a few months ago via email; I was thinking the windows were going to be access hatches that flipped up, like some Land Rover D110s. Was this idea abandoned? The windows do look great, but the access hatches would be more handy for me.

I've just spent the last week reading over every Ursa Minor J30 review I can find - this is by far the best discussion about it.

So for those that have one, any thoughts on how hot the pop up might get in the late afternoon/early evening if it was painted matte black like the top?

BrianJWilson, you mentioned you spend a few nights in Utah in 100+ degree heat, how much did your white top radiate heat into the bed area?

The UMV site strongly advises against painting it black, but I just want to rule out an obvious aesthetics choice (having the black top all be one color, rather than white and black, on my steel blue metallic '08 JK). I'm eager to hear any thoughts anyone cares to offer.

Thanks to Cobble and Brian for being early adopters on this new camper option and sharing their experience so thoroughly on this site and others.

By the time I had been running around in the sun all day, everything was heat soaked anyway. One afternoon on the white rim we found some relief laying up top with the screens open to get some shade and breeze. All of the surrounding rocks were soaking up the sun and radiating heat so it would be hot regardless. BUT I'd still say the white is cooler, not unlike a white vs black car in the sun. Normally I'm not hanging out in the top front the day without shade though, so I suppose it just depends on your use.

I'm picky about how things look and work together so I splurged for all matching paint. I don't blame you for trying to keep the top all one color either.

I hope to order a J30 early next year. I have a Rescue Green jeep with black hardtop currently, Rather than painting the J30 all black to match the top color, I'm thinking of painting only the sides of the popup black and maybe two inches onto the top surface, leaving the rest of the top surface white. You can't really see the top anyway.

Q&A: windows, brackets

Does the outer piece of glass slide or the inner piece (front/back etc)? Is there a left/right part so that they both open on the same side if you install two?

Great question - the inner rear glass slides forward to reveal the screened area. They are designed as a left and a right, with both opening toward the front when installed.

Do you have info for awning brackets yet?
Not yet...

Good news - the access hatches are a totally different project than these sliders, one that is coming along well. No photos yet though...

That's a cool idea!

I slept in the j30 a few nights ago on Mt Hood, about 6k elev, 30-32 degrees and 20-30mph winds.

Not surprisingly, it was still plenty warm up there by myself. In fact I woke up once sweating but it wasn't really that cold out. I cut some reflectix insulation that fits up against the sides, from the windows forward. Just to keep my feet and legs a little warmer if anything. Next time I'll probably angle the front away from the wind slightly as the sides buffeted a little with the nose directly into the wind.

Snow plows and blowers shoved me out before daylight, and there was about 1/8" of ice on everything on the windward side. The top closed up just fine, but it was a couple days before I could open the top to air it out. The cushions were a little damp as the ice had melted off of the fabric sides, no big deal, brought them inside to dry.

If I can avoid the snow plows it should be a decent way to overnight on the mountain for snowboarding trips.

I thought about that as well. However, you can see the roof of Jeep -- especially in camper mode. I bought a used J30 so after driving around with a white top for a while, decided to paint to match the body. It turned out great.

I remember when you posted the first pictures of that top after you bought it. It was such a beautiful Jeep...other than that white top! I was shaking my head wondering why you didn't just paint it!

It looks WAY better now! Congrats!

Big improvement! Putting some miles on that rig?

Indeed! 12k since April. We took most of the summer off to go adventuring - Glacier, Canadian Rockies, Yellowstone, Tetons, Sawtooths, Eastern Oregon, Olympics, Vancouver Island, North Cascades.

You are really staying warm in 30 degree weather? We hit some chilly nights in central Oregon and I think we need to upgrade our sleeping bags to three season. What's your bag rated?

I've been fairly mindful of wind. We had some windy nights up in Jasper and it was pretty loud. I'm curious to know the wind limits of our pop-tops.
