Ursa Minor Pop-Top Jeep JK

Hi. Just received my J30 and mounted it myself on a new Rubicon. Getting ready for my first big trip. Left it out in the up position in heavy rain this weekend and it leaked badly. Leaked inside the tent in several locations where the tent is screwed down with the white plastic strips. Also leaked very badly into the front footwells - seemed to be coming from the top fwd corners of the front doors. DEEP puddles in the footwells. The slower leaks in the top seemed to also fill up the closed portion of the fiberglass shell over the windshield which then dumps on your sholders when you move the vehicle. Any suggestions? Like I said - I installed it myself so I could have done something wrong on the the camper to jeep sealing, but I don't think I can blame myself for the tent to camper seal.

John fixed my leak for me. Water was getting in through the mounting bolt, silconed it up and it is good to go. As usual John was super helpful, recommend you give him a call to see if he can fix it.

Thanks to you and the others for comments on the leak. For the tent leak I tried tightening down all the screws that hold down the plastic strips. Squirted the house and it still leaked in many locations. Dried it all off and tried just a shower spray not directly on the seam - still leaked. Oddly enough, even with no spraying and only residual water left on the outside the seam seemed to wick the water right in with capilary action. It seems I need some sort of sealer - plan on contacting John tommorow. As to the other leak in the front upper door corners, I loosened the camper shifted it fwd as musch as possible, tightned it all down and squirted away. Seemed to be somewhat better but not completely cured. Will let everyone know if I can make some more progress. 10 days till a 3 week trip to Newfoundland from GA so would like to be dry.

Where the rubber channel from the jeep meets the top (at the upper corner of the door just forward of where the top's bolt comes through roll bar) do you have that sealed with 3m tape or something else? Without the tape water will flow right in. Learned that the hard way when I removed the tape John had installed, and figured it out after going through the jeep leak pdf.

Hey Brian, I hope you don't mind, but I pirated this photo to use as my desktop background...sort of inspiration, ya know? It alternates every 60 seconds between this and another great pic I got from the ADV site of a rider on the road up to Deadhorse. Someday I hope to combine the two and drive a J30 equipped Jeep to Deadhorse.

Damn! That's a beautiful Jeep!

Don't mind at all! I had every j30 picture I could find, saved on my phone for at less 10 months! Something to get me through work!

Main problem solved. After talking to John we figured out the top was built and shipped w/o the sealing tape between the tent fabric and the fiberglass top. He fedex'd the sealing tape and after half a day of work I had it installed. Just got back from three weeks up in Newfoundland and Labrador with lots of rain and cold and had no leaks inside the camper. Still have some leakage at the top front corner of the drivers door, especially with a direct hose blast when washing the car. Will work on that one next.

Try caulking the hinge assembly and hinge bolts. That is where mine was leaking

The pictures are not that great but here is how I outfitted the inside of the jeep for our recent three week trip. I actually built it in a rush out of left over J30 packing crate materials and covered it with indoor/outdoor carpeting. I intend to take what I learned from the build and the trip and try again using lighter construction materials.
In the back behind the rear seat I built a storage box for camping gear. I made it as wide as I could still leaving enough room for two Montague folding mountain bikes which are stored inside the vehicle. If you look close the front wheels for the bikes tuck up above the aft rollbar up against the roofline. There are some shaped wood blocks that hold the bikes in place. The camping gear in the box is accessed from the rear. There is also an access hole on the front side of the box that can be reached from inside the vehicle that utilizes the left over space in the box. The box is also conveniently located to use as a step up into the sleeping compartment. Not shown in these early pictures are some wood blocks added to restrain the plastic storage containers I stack on top of the box. The full height one in the picture is stowed in the position shown. A half height one goes in the middle so I still have a rear view mirror view.
Over the back seats I cut out a fitted board which protects the seats and gives a flatter surface to stack gear when traveling and to stand on when climbing up in to the sleeper or standing up inside to change clothes etc. It is split to match the 60/40 seat. When there are no bikes in the back I can open the "40" side of the back seat. I can't open the "60" side due to the rear storage box, maybe thats something I'll fix during the next design iteration.
Please post any other good ideas you all have come up with to help me better rig it for the next trip. I know I would like a dual battery system and an externally mounted awning.
To answer a question, there were only two of us on the trip.

New Ursa Minor Option: Rear Half Slider Windows

Just an update, we now offer opening rear quarter windows as an option for our Jeep campers. If you, your kids or your dogs may be sleeping "downstairs" or if one needs a little more air flow on the road, this might be just the solution. These are half sliders, with the rear opening screened off. Pricing is $350 per side, we install for free in your camper - just let us know when ordering.

Of course, if you have a 2007-2010 OEM Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Hard Top, these will also fit.

Very cool!
I don't sleep "downstairs" in mine typically but I have thought that a sliding/screened window would be useful!
I have to ask though since it isn't clear. Does the outer piece of glass slide or the inner piece (front/back etc)? Is there a left/right part so that they both open on the same side if you install two?

Do you have info for awning brackets yet?
