I'm looking for the rear clip or rear section if you will of a toyota pickup, 1st or 2nd gen Tacoma. The whole thing bed, tail gate, fuel cell, lights, etc.... the whole thing. I want to make it into a super pimp offroad expo trailer. So if I wasn't clear as to what I Need just imagine cutting the frame 6" in front of the the spring perches and kaboom there you go. Obviously this will be a wrecked vehicle with only the rear end left salvageable. 4WD would be preferred but prerunner is fine to, it will need to be a 6 lug.

HEAVY! (and not in a good way)

Most places it is illegal to run a actual axle with a Diff as a trailer axle. You are probably better off building a frame as well.

Fuel tank placement is partly under the cab so it is not going to be conducive to trailer modification.

You will also need to start with a long bed unless you plan to put a heavy tongue box on to get the proper weight distribution. Even with a long bed it might be wise to "Bob" the bed to make sure the 60/40 weight distribution is correct.

The truck frame is going to take a big drop once it clears the axle and as a trailer you really want the frame to come out in the same plane as the bottom of the bed floor to maximize ground clearance at the hitch. You are probably better taking some 1x3 box and just making a frame then using the truck frame.

Lot more then you thought huh?

I looked hard at doing what you are concidering. The best thing I came up with is the long bed on custom frame cut down to a short bed behind the axle so I could put a topper on it.

Actually I had considered all these things, my brother has an 02 Taco and he looks at me weird when he sees me taking measurements. Yeah I had hope to kick the fuel cell back, add a water tank on the other side, considered the bed bob, I had also thought about building the frame and just adding the truck bed. Now this trailer won't be as much or even close to what the AT trailers are capable of but more to tow the an event where ever it is set up camp and either run the trails, shop for supplies, etc. I'm still looking for a military trailer and looked at one the other day but was way to rusted out.

Well after my brother flipped his truck in Dec. 07 we finally got the truck back. I will asses the condition of the frame and bed and determine whether or not I can salvage it for a trailer build. I will replace the axle with a trailer axle and pull everything else off. I was thinking a roll and lock bed cover will work well as well as a roof rack track so I can mount cross bars and the RTT.

Just out of curiosity, what is the difference between the 4WD and Prerunner rear ends? I know the Prerunner is 2x4, but wouldn't the rear half be the same?

I think so, the other issue might be the short assness of the short bed. But if it's free and I can conceptually get it to work on paper then I might make a go of it. After my last trip I really think a trailer might help the fuel economy if not the performance. (While I realize the weight of my gear will still slow me down the wind drag will be much less)
