What did you do to your Expo Jeep today?

Dirt Road Anthem
Took mine out wheeling today it's been well over a year since it has seen dirt. Felt sooooo good to throw it in 4-lo and crawl some dirt and rocks. Transfer case worked and shifted like butter!!! No cooling issues and as usual the AW4 shifted perfect. Finally got to really test out the locker and also my AJ Offroad super square rock rails.

thank you Hill, Bill E. and the rest of you guys for the info, the JK is a manual, my XJ has 8.25 and HP 30, who knows where I heard the gearing comments. it was somewhere on Jeep Forum. sorry I haven't been on in awhile, busy busy with building a deck for my dads house and some other family stuff.

today I installed new front shocks, the originals (330,000 miles on them) were junk. I got a pair of super lift super rides or something like that for christmas and really they aren't too shabby so far. I threw them on and took it for a little desert drive. drove through some washes and such. took a few photos. they will be in my build thread later on. (project brooke) i also removed and saved the old bar pins from the original axles, just cause you can never have enough spare parts I guess. also "Officially" rolled over 330k miles, I have been rounding up the past few weeks :D now its at 330,100ish

wanted to rebuild my head at rick waters racing engines (builds stock car motors for the race team my dad crew chiefs for) but I was told by my uncle that if you rebuild the head it will up the compression and this can cause it to burn oil cause the rings are old and tired.. so I will most likely be doing a head rebuild and replace all the bearings, rings and maybe pistons. maybe hone the block but I have peaked through the spark plug holes and they look fine but who knows.

switch plate fabrication in the snow

I have been thinking about a location to put in a switch panel... adding some lights, and dont like where my switch is located currently for the ones I already have. I looked online and found the Gaugeplates.com (http://www.gaugeplates.com/offroad.php) one, but it seemed...expensive to me?

I liked the design, so I decided to "copy" it in my own garage fab ghetto sort of way. Grabbed some sheet metal, made a paper template and 45 minutes later, this is where I am at.

Switches fit great, all I need to do is scrounge up some black vinyl to wrap this with. I am also making up a power/relay box for this setup, running all the switches off of CAT5 cable as per FitchVA's setup. SLOW project as I have no garage and it is cold/raining/snowing. Pic below is not mine... http://fitchva.com.

I guess this might not be "fabrication" per-say, but I did cut metal, use a grinder, step drill bit and made something from nothing?

More to come.

Finished my switch panel...I managed to find a little time today, and got the rest of the switch panel completed. I am not 100% happy with the vinyl, it looks OK, but it is too shiny for my liking. Will likely paint it when I get around to doing it. I removed the hinged ashtray thing, and did a test fit of my plate...fit perfectly, but I needed to carve a little plastic away from each side at the top to clear the 2 outer switches. Ready to get fancy.

I installed the vinyl carefully, it is nice and tacky, so it stuck well. Picked up the sign vinyl at Industrial Plastic and Paint, cheap @ $2.99 a yard for the 16" wide stuff. Picked up some glossy red too as the color matches the Jeep Flame Red perfectly. For use later...maybe.

Popped the switches in... nice.

Looks kinds crappy in this pic, all fingerprinty and dusty. Anyhow, I went out and test fit the finished product, perfect fit (again) and proceeded to screw it in place with some standard interior panel screws.

Too glossy, but all in all I am happy with this. Might make a cover for it too... hinged and so on. Now comes the fun, wiring it all in!! Oh and while I was out there, I fabbed up some brackets for my under Jeep LED lighting. A little L channel aluminum, drill, files and some gel epoxy.

Start...

I felt like someone was watching me...weird?

popped in the Oznium SuperFlux LED's (waterproof)...

Mixed up some gel epoxy and sealed them on to the bracket from the back. These are not going anywhere. Now all I need to do is to mount them, and wire them in to my new switch panel via my pending relay/power box.

More to come...

Relay box is nearly complete... well, basically all I need to do is to wire it in to the Jeep. I need to wire in the switch panel as well...but the weather SUCKS for working in the driveway. Man I need a garage in the worst way, well one I can get my Jeep into that is.

Relays are all wired in with the exception of the final connections to the lights (some of which are still not yet mounted). The power line in and the ground line and of course the control line from the switch to trigger the relays. I couldn't find a project box as big as the one in the thread where I got the idea, so I had to stack the relays. They are held in with double sided foam tape and then some aluminum L channel that was cut to press in tight. That is also taped to the relays. This is NOT going anywhere. All in all pretty happy with how it is working out.

Getting...so...close... argh.

Installed Netbook, with full mapping and tracks from all of the trail systems my group has run.

Used a Minimount Netbook Case - great aluminum, padded case mount. RAM mounts from passenger seat bolt to the Minimount. Garmin USB GPS receiver velcroed on top of the Tuffy stereo cover; plug and play instant GPS to the Netbook using Nroute.

well it was a long maintenance weekend on the TJ..
Changed the rear main because it had a very slight weep
Serviced the tranny with new filter and fluid
Changed T case fluid
Coolant flush
Oil change
New cat and muffler because the muffler was starting to break apart and the cat was starting to get stinky
Now tonight i will be trying to install a MML without a BL which will eventually lead to a flat skid.
Only at 48k miles and hoping this will all be good for another 48k..
