What do you know about the Toyota Hilux with D-4D ?

Exactly, although I know Christian has already had a 70.

.

It was an early model with some miles on it...new one would be leaps and bounds better.

The Hi-Lux is no slouch either, but if I had the choice...

Depending on the length of the trip...I would weigh renting verses buying as well.

Side note, one thing I can't believe the 2nd gen Tacoma has is a push button 4wd and transfercase. I've replaced my actuator twice so I finally replaced the transfer case with a manual one from an earlier 4runner.

Yeah that is a bit cheesy....

..heck maybe I wrong on the Tacoma vs Hi-Lux...on first "in the flesh" impressions I wasn't too wowed with the Hi-Lux....but given the specs between the two...the Hi-Lux looks better on paper.

Interestingly enough the grass is always greener on the other side though, I hear Aussies like the 1GR-FE 4.0 liter petrol that we get over the diesel but who knows why.

Not a chance, while some people buy the 4.0 V6, the diesel still outsells the petrol 20 to 1.

The D4D is a great motor, I've got one in my current prado, and had one in a hilux. Plenty of power and nice driveable motor. the new V8 diesel in the 70 series and 200 series is a real cracker too.

Christian, I would bet that the hilux has a more reliable manual transfer case and 4wd actuation too. Another plus. Anyone know for sure? I assume it does because even the Lexus GX470 which is basically a luxo Prado has a manual shift lever for H/L transfer case.

It's still a 'manual' transfer case, yes.

I love the 70 and it will always be my favorite.

But we are trying to find something that has a bit more creature comfort this time. Ideally, a 70 pickup with a camper would also be the best option, but the Hilux is more affordable/available it seems.

We'll keep looking, we still have many months before we go. Tomorrow I am stopping by Marc's XP Camper factory...

Oh, and by the way my 70 is about to be used again...! Matthew has finally gotten the paperwork sorted in Belgium - only took 2 years.

He is leaving in a couple weeks for a trip to Norway. Can't wait to see some pictures and reports!

negative ghostrider, pattern is full! I need my speed as well as DD / offroad vehicle. ;)

Besides...I'm nearly 37 and still need the sports car to attract women (lol)

Christian,
From your research have you found the "best" country to buy one in? Sort of like buying a 70 if you want one with the steering wheel on the left and certain engine options you have to go to certain country's. I can imagine a bare bones Hilux with a manual transmission, a lockright or locker in the rear, the d4d etc would be a beautiful thing.

Hilux payload

The questions was asked but not answered (valid for a 4x4 diesel with dual cab):

Kerb weight (Kg) - 1940 Kg

Gross vehicle weight rating (Kg) - 2780 Kg

Payload = 840 Kg or 1848 lbs

More details here: 2012 Toyota Hilux

The Hilux is a solid platform for travel. Most people select the diesel for remote travel (in Australia) due to fuel availability. In the outback, diesel is the fuel of choice due to availability. The gas (or petrol) variants have the advantage of lower maintenance costs. Every comparison I've read looking at the same vehicle but different engine (gas vs. diesel) all come to the same conclusion. The long term maintenance and fuel costs are cheaper always cheaper for the gas vehicle.

Cheers,
P
