Which Toyota would you pick?

Hey everyone,

well this is my first time post in this section. I have an fj-40 and I have decided to go to school in colorado and IMO the 40 will not suit my needs there.

I am intersted in either a 4 runner or 4 door tacoma.
1. Are there any technical problems that stand out on either one?

2. Which one that you would prefer to take from CO to AZ to MEX ect.?

3.Which one has the greater amount of aftermarket parts?

This would be a truck that would be left relatively stock cause I have the 40 for the trail.
I would prefer the 4 runner but i'm open to both. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brendan

Both have an enormous amount of aftermarket.

If it was me, I would go for the 4 Door Tacoma, nice to keep the dirty gear separated from the passengers. I had an old 4Runner, that was my only gripe about it.

Well you didn't say what years Tacoma or 4runner you are considering... I assume a late model used car?

I'm partial to my new 4Runner but I believe the Tacomas are more popular. There are more accessories for Tacomas but I guess that matters less if it will remain basically stock. If it's a daily driver "car" then it really boils down to what you like, and if a wagon or pickup is more suited to your lifestyle.

Against the 4runner is that the latest 4th Generation rigs from 2003-up are very low to the ground and almost require a lift for anything other than mall crawling.

X2 for exactly the same reason.

You can leave the Taco pretty close to stock for a DD and still be plenty capable.
What year 4Runner?

access cab tacoma -unless you have kids - makes it so easy to load gear without having to walk / work around an open door. They have about the same room too considering the seats etc in the 4 door. 4 doors look a lot cooler, however - if that is important to you

I had a couple of Runners before I got my Tacoma, and both models have their advantages. A lot of the decision comes down to the bed versus SUV preference. I wanted/needed the external truck bed - more versatility for gear, bikes, etc. And with the 4 door option on the Tacoma, you still have plenty of interior space.

Can't go wrong either way though.

Edit: Oh yea, and you should sell me your 40. You won't need 2 trucks in school - better to have more beer money :shakin:

I would probably consider a tundra to use as a tow rig while I was in colorado but that is just my.02. the older style can be with a v-8 for towing the 40 and offer all the comfort of a new truck. access cab had 4 doors for easy access for gear if you are not worried about seating more then 2 people. They also had a c.c version as well.

x2 if you're more into the outdoors. if you're more into family and city you might want to consider the 4runner. but some more details about what your intentions with the truck might yield some better suggestions.

I'm wondering why the 40 won't suit your needs? Where are you going to school? Anyway, I'd just drive the FJ40 and save your money. That's just me, though.

Are you interested in a new or used truck? If a used 4Runner is on your list, might I suggest a 3rd Gen with a stock rear E-Locker installed. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the '99 or '00 was the last year for this option.

It just seems uneconomical to take a 10 mpg car back and forth every few months, its also pretty uncomfortable to drive for long trips. I'm going to let my little brother use it when I leave, so its not up for sale sorry guys. I'm going to CU Boulder also. I really like the new 4 door tacos but it seems like I would put a camper shell or tonneau cover on it just to keep the snow out.
thanks for the input everyone.

DROOOOL...that thing is amazing. I'll trade you my moms brand new toyota highlander for it HAHA
Sure does make the '78 Ford LTD, the '83 Civic and beater '72 Ford F100 I had as a younger man look like crap! Heck, I'm 36 and been out of school now a bit more than 5 years and my '91 pickup looks terrible compared to that... Man, it really would be shame to leave that behind.
