Which Toyota would you pick?

I'm really in a quandry as to why a college freshman is considering anything other than a kick a$% 40. You've got plenty of time when your old to worry about things like comfort and speed. Do you want to completely blend into the crowd with a newer fjc/4r/taco or be the guy with the "cool old jeep."

Completely agree. I'd even get something even more run-down in college. I had an old Integra back in the college days, and it was perfect. Good MPG, didn't care if someone threw up in it (which will happen, by the way ) and endless parking lot door dings. Get like a 94 Toyota truck or 4Runner (4-banger) and just have fun in it without the worries of a nice car. Trust me, if you get a new one, it WILL get trashed.

I would suggest looking at why you are only getting 10 mpg. You ought to be getting a bit more than that. I can get 15-17mpg with good tuning, gear, and a tail wind Are you V8 or 2F?

The bus system is awesome, you can get everywhere without a vehicle, I would bring the 40 and hoof it locally, bum rides to the powder, and fly frontier home over the holidays(under 100 each way)... just to have my 40 here!

I think they only came with an auto tranny, OBD.

Don't tell my wife that. She just bought an 07 TRD with a six speed manual and rear diff lock. The trade off is that they're only avail with a short bed. It has absolutely no mods yet, except bungie cords in the bed to hold groceries in.

I think he's talking about the previous gen Tacomas. When the Dbl Cab was introduced (2001?), it only came with an Auto transmission.

I would have a very hard time paying over $10k for anything with more than 100k on it. I don't care what it is or how well it's been taken care of, 100k is a lot of miles and $10,000 is just too much money for something with that kind of mileage.

Of course, some people lose their minds with anything that has the word "Toyota" written on it. I've heard of people paying $7500 for an FJ60 with 200k on it, so I guess anything's possible.

Time to bring this tread back from the dead.

I've taken everyone's recommendations and spent the last few months searching for a 4th gen. 4runner. There were slim pickings for a long time, then last week someone put a 4runner up for sale a block away from school. :yikes:
It's a V8 limited 4th gen 4runner (not sure on exact year). It has about 43,000 miles and has never been used off-road. Although it has oversized off- road tires (BFG AT).

The price seems reasonable for what its seems to be. I plugged in '04 for the year (it seems to be newer) and it was 1,000 under blue book for the options that I included. I guess you could call the color greenish-blue.

$21,000

that's all it had on the for sale sign.

What I'm really interested in is what you guys think about the price. Maybe a min and max you would use while haggling. my only concern is that there is nothing that makes for a legitimate argument/complaint while haggling.

As for the 40, my parents won't let me take it. It stays in town with my younger brother.

It's not a great price or a bad price. A year and a half ago, I almost bought an 04 4Runner V8 for $20k. It had 40k miles. I can guarantee that it is a leased vehicle and the owner is trying to make a few hundred bucks by selling it privately.

Anyway, I see no reason for a V8 over the V6 unless you tow a ton. Even then, the 4.0L V6 is plenty capable. The biggest thing is that there is a timing chain on the V6 vs. a timing belt on the V8. Weird, I know. And couple that in with the rising gas prices, and the V6 looks better and better. Even though people say the difference isn't THAT much, still 2-3mpg is 2-3mpg. You're in school--you need all the savings you can get.

If I were you, I'd try to get a 4th Gen Sport Edition V6 4x4.

I love my 98 4runner Limited but my husband drives our 93 Corolla. He commutes downtown and needs the economy car.
Have you thought about a Subi or a car? Is mpg a driving force?
