Thank you for the tip. I'm going to be looking for scrap yards pretty soon. Anybody have and idea of a good on near Orange County, CA?

Clarification on the smog check in CA for Diesels from Mike's post above: 97 and earlier are currently exempt, 98 and newer get smog checks (just verified this last month at the DMV when they told me that my 97 would not have to be dont, it was the cutoff year for the exemption - got lucky there!)
