White Rim Trail beta needed...(11/23 & 11/24 2007)

The campsite reservations might be the hangup for you guys. Though last minute pulls are possible, they are usually not ideal. With a vehicle though, at least you can afford to be more flexible. When I biked it with a friend a couple of years ago, we rode the whole thing self supported (ie bringing a 7 gallon water tank on a Bob yikes!) and did it three days. For us, the logistics of which campgrounds we'd use was important. We rode from Mineral bottom to Shaffer trail and if I biked it again, would probably go the other way, just because the Shaffer trail was a beast with a heavy Bob in tow, especially after a long winter of no riding. In a vehicle I don't think it would matter as much.

I can't wait to get back there sometime to get a bit more of the beaten path.

Shouldn't be a major issue... we didn't have the tripped planned with enough time to secure permits, but only 25% of the campgrounds were taken by permit, the other 75% will be first-come first serve. Worst case scenario we will dead head it in & out of the part, camping at either end. I'm used to covering alot of ground in a day, while I would like to have time to explore, etc, I'm not above moving quickly through it :D

Thanks for all the suggestions!

For hiking, there is a cool little slot on the downhill side of the road in the unnamed canyon where the Whilhite Trail meets the White Rim Trail.

Since you have done both ends you probably have see the big open area that would make a great camp site at Horsethief Bottom. When I did the WRT the only official site available was Upheaval Bottom. What a waste that was, driving all around the White Rim in one day, paying for a campsite then driving out the next morning and finding GREAT free camping 10 minutes from the one I had to get a reservation for.

On the other end there is a nice cliffside camping area at N38 31.861 W109 43.060. We had lunch there on a very windy day but there are a lot of juniper trees to provide shelter close to the edge. My wife saw a bobcat, we went looking to get a photo of him but could only find bunnies and scat. Ravens were doing an acrobatic show just a few feet away in the updraft of the cliff. Even without wildlife you are perched on an ampitheater with a view of the potash plant, Jacksons Hole and Amasa Back. Get there from a dirt road heading northeast just before the Dead Horse Point enterance station. It used to be a shortcut to Long Canyon Road but it is fenced off there.

I guess I am down on camping on the official NPS sites but if you can get one near the middle, go for it! I won't go through the trouble of reserving and paying for a site at the end again.

When you pick up your permit you will need to know the license plate, make, year and color of each of the vehicles on your permit. Just a FYI in case you guys work out a meet-up. There is a limit of 3 vehicles at each camp on your permit, too.

Here's my 2 cents...I've done the trail 3 times for what it's worth. White Crack is too windy to camp at, but a must see. Camp at Murphy's Hogback and get either camp B or A. A is really cool if you don't have small children because the boundary goes right to the edge. There is a little amphitheater sitting there where you can hang out, eat, drink, whatever while looking right over the edge.

If you can find it, don't miss the Black Crack too. I don't have time now, but if you search White Rim here you should be able to find a bunch of pics I posted once. Actually, look early on in wilman's Moab Gathering post.

Have fun, I'll be there again in March. We do it every year on bikes.
