Why do folks say, "Jeeps aren't expedition vehicles?"

My wife and I and our dog spent 2 weeks exploring the Cumberland / Appalachian Mountains in our 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (TJL) last fall. We spent about half the evenings in hotels and half camping. It was a glorious get away for us. We were in the vehicle of our choosing.

One particular vehicle is not right for every type of person in every part of the world. In North America, there are many Jeep dealers. In Africa their are more European & Asian brand dealers. I purchased a particular vehicle for the environment that I live and operate it in. I live in the United States, Jeep seemed to be the obvious choice for the "no bounds" traveling and exploring that I do.

Like to Camp
Generally speaking, roaming around the USA (usually out west), I've always been within a few hours of some kind of food or a gas station. Otherwise my "expo" traveling is really about what else I have to bring along? My wife and I usually take two weeks off each year for a trip that's at least half camping in the woods. I find a Wrangler very cozy for two. My first trips with my TJ were just done by removing the rear seat, consider the weight and usefulness of everything, use duffle bags that fit to every inch of available space, a cube-sized cooler, and we had a lot of fun trips!

Two summers ago I did add a small hitch rack for a new tent, better chairs and even a table. That made the trip a little more comfortable. :D

This year I also added an off-road trailer, which gave me even more room then I knew what to do with?! (Cots were added, a larger, better cooler, more beer and an ENO hammock!)

My next addition is an RTT that is showing up on Monday for the trailer. I've worked hard on my Jeep. It's nicely built for a good ride and handling on and off-road, gets me where I want to go, and has the ability to safely tow a small trailer. I have no plans to ever change from my two-door Jeep.

Maybe it's a definition disagreement. To me expedition vehicle is one you can sleep, cook and travel in. A jeep will take you places where you can camp. YMMV.

I LOVE my 2005 LJ! I built beds for the back in '12 and went on a trip to Ohio and back through 11 states. I camped out the entire time I was on the road.

I since then changed to BFG tires. I didn't realize how "city" that spare looked. Fixed that!

:sombrero: I go on trips for 1 day to 15 days and leave my JKUR in 4hi--without seeing a paved road-

I carry enough gas for a 500 mile trip also food/water/utensils-

Pretty hard to beat the Jeep Unlimited Rubicon-

Comfortable at 70mph, or 1 mph-uphill or over rocks/snow/desert/shale-

Nothing wrong witha jeep unlimited !

Since purchasing my LC 2.5yrs ago I don't think I've driven my YJ more than 100km.

Weak axles, weak transmission, archaic engine, interior made of melted garbage bags, body held together with self tapping sheet metal screws. Only redeeming quality is cheap and readily available parts. TJ's were far better, JK's better still. I wouldn't touch anything pre-97 Jeep.

I've never driven a YJ, but I did drive a CJ for years and an Army M151A1 for years and learned to drive in a Willy's. All very capable solid vehicles.

I'm glad YOU like YOUR LC.

I think if they do a test, lr, lc, and jku, the jkur might lack in interior space but capability wise the jkur will beat the others. They should go to the rubicon and see who survives!

You are probably right, but I'm not sure how this reinforces the Jeep's "expedition vehicle" qualities over the others you mention? IMO that test is a statement of rock crawling ability on a notoriously tight, technical trail where SFA trucks excel.

Also, is anyone REALLY saying that Jeeps can't be true expedition vehicles? Provided the sheer amount of content on the forum, quantity of "expedition" accessories for Jeeps, and that it is the vehicle of choice (especially the JKUR) for many industry/lifestyle vets, I don't think anyone is arguing with you guys! I certainly am not.

People buy what they want and "the best" is entirely subjective:)

Driving the rubicon once isn't really going to prove anything. Take them all to Africa or Australia and drive them off road and rely on them for your life for at least a year and see which one survives.
