Why we buy Toyotas

That's a funny little jingle. I like jeeps, the vintage flavor, but wouldn't buy anything newer than 2006. I like yotas, mostly the vintage flavor, but also it would be hard to buy anything that new from them too. Every one is right, their personal trucks are better than yours. The reality is pretty much all new vehicles suck. Over complicated and the focus of there existence is ease of assembly at the factory. It doesn't matter who build it, it's still human design and will always have flaws. I'm sorry break everyone's first world bubbles, your truck sucks, so does mine.

It was a '97 Camry. I bought it new because everyone said "Toyotas never fail"! It was more expensive than any of its competitors and it was the most expensive car to own that I have had. I know it is not a truck/SUV but the statements from the Toyota guys is always..."Toyotas never fail". Which was not my experience. Plus all three of the dealers I had the displeasure of dealing with were XXXhole criminals!

I just can't stomach ever attempting another one, no matter what model.

List of failures:
Head gasket at 30,000
Steering rack at 60,000
The mounts for the struts rattled from day one. Dealer said they couldn't find the problem....until 5,000 miles after the warranty. (they failed again at about 75,000)
Started leaking oil from front of engine at about 80,000. Couldn't be fixed?
Another steering rack at 110,000
Engine completely DONE at 125,000. Burned oil, leaked oil, and had about 9 HP.
The brakes were garbage from day one! I had to manually adjust the rears about once a month (again the dealer told me that there was no issue)
The interior was great though!

I traded it for an '05 Grand Prix which I drove the same amount of time and miles and all I had to replace was one transmission line.
Oh, and I have had my Cherokee ten years and have replaced a window switch and a crank sensor.

It's funny how everyone has their own "worst experience ever."

I'm sure you could find someone who had a similar "worst experience" with a Dodge or Jeep product.

For what it's worth, I do think Toyota is generally a reliable brand, and so are some American companies, like GM and Buick. I don't think Toyotas are reliable simply because I like them; I like Toyotas because I've researched their brand reliability and track record.

And while I admire Jeep's strong attempts to maintain an offroading tradition with their newer vehicles, the company as a whole isn't doing so well in terms of reliability.

This is of course true. When anything as complicated as a car is being churned out in the numbers that that the big automakers churn them out in, there is always going to be some that are just bad. Hard to overcome when your only experience with a brand (whatever it is) is bad.

I had '90 XJ 4.0 4WD. I bought it new. Worst vehicle I've owned. It had electrical gremlins that were never properly sorted. It was constantly popping fuses and the headlights would shut off randomly. It also chewed up and spit out fuel injectors like watermelon seeds. Rears brakes that liked to randomly lock up. I took it to 3 different dealers and none of them could get it to run correctly. I was going to go lemon law but ended up getting a great trade on a Trooper. It was my first and last Chrysler product.

Coming from a 2012 JKRU to a 2015 Tacoma, my experience has been the complete opposite so far.

I worked for Lexus for a number of years and I promise you Toyota's have their issues as well. I've owned 3 Jeeps (93 XJ, 99 TJ, 05 Unlimited Rubicon) and never had any major issues with them. I grew up in a Toyota family, went away and bought 3 Jeeps and then went back to Toyota. I feel like Toyota's are just made better. Interior materials seem better, no rattles, ect.

Finally in expo white.
Where are you people buying your vehicles from that you're all getting terrible lemons?! All of mine have been 10 years old 130K miles + at the time of purchase never had a major problem.

EDIT: Of course I've never fallen for the Jeep/Toyota meme.

That 90 XJ was actually an AMC ;)

I've been a Jeep guy my whole life, but I can nod with approval at that video. This past October my wife and I took a long weekend drive to Ouray to soak up the fall color. We drove our 06 Grand Cherokee which we had for 3 dependable years, only needing a radiator replacement. Prior to our departure, the Jeep had one of the transfer case shifting into neutral recalls done by Chrysler. Fast forward to the start of Cinnamon Pass and the Jeep wouldn't go into low range. Luckily we were climbing from Lake City so the slope was more gradual and we made it up and over in high range. I learned that the recalls done by Chrysler generally render low range useless, but that we could regain temporary use of low range by pulling and reinstalling a fuse. The whole reason we bought a Jeep SUV was to have a dependable 4wd with low range for these types of getaways. The Grand made me so mad that it was sold within a month.

I still have the 03 Rubicon I bought in 03 and a rusty 86 Comanche that I daily drive....but I am now searching for a 100 Series Toyota to fill the void left by the Grand Cherokee. I hope it doesn't disappoint!

I like toyotas, mainly older tundras and the taco's .
BUT I LOVE JEEPS!!!
2012 JKU lots of mods runs great no problems! Two jeep Comanches 1 with 150k the other 218k got them modded out and love them also.again never left me stranded.
1995 XJ 130k perfect in every way ....it's ready for anything too . No problems.

The video is great, and I imagine the same boring folks that like there boring Toyotas really like it as it makes them feel better about there well built "vanilla" Toyotas.
All my jeeps get looks from everyone.
But let's be realistic nobody ever bought a Toyota because of there rough or sexy looks.

Have a good time with your admittedly funny video , because there's nothing funny about your boring rigs and I assume lives:) .

Just the opinion of a life long Jeeper !

Wow look at that land cruiser ********

Yup, I've had my share of Jeeps and I just dumped our 04 Grand for an 09 Tacoma. Very Boring and very Vanilla but I never wonder if it will start for my wife in a parking lot somewhere. That's what always worried me about the Jeep. The one day my wife came home and said the switches weren't working on the drivers door. Sure enough, a bunch of the wires were broken in the door hinge. That sucked. The Toyotas are boring as sin, look at a Corolla from 2001 but they just run and run and run...

I can't get over still wanting a TJ though, just as a hobby truck.

One should reasonably expect that you can put a toyota in the back of your old ford and drive up a mountain, because that's whats in the commercial.
