Around here, while ago there was a rash of ”Greenvandals” attacking offroaders by putting a wire across the ”in” terminals of exposed winch controllers, then walk away...
But not heard any of that lately.
Those criminals likely moved on to commit arson and looting which is ok by me because that somehow defeats nazis.

That’s part of the reason for running it under the hood. The ones I saw would grab the winch cable and run it over the top of the car and hook to the rear tow hitch. Then they would short the winch to crush the car.

I’ve seen this all over the world. In Cali is was big thing by the three huggers. In Australia and Europe it was just hoodlums doing hoodlum things.
