A reptile Morning

I was out raking up the Mesquite beans this morning and saw this King snake cruising over my rock wall.

Then I turned around and saw this guy (Gila Monster) peaking out from behind the A/C unit at me.

I followed him a bit catch a few more shots of him. We don't see him often so when he does come out I want to take advantage of the opportunity. :wings:

This one is a little out of focus but I thought the tongue was cool.

Gila Monsters live under you bed at night. :xxrotflma:punk03:

They are wild. They live in Southern Arizona and Northern Mexico mostly. They spend most of their time under ground so you don't see them very often. One of only two venomous lizards in the US. You don't want this guy to clamp down on you. :Wow1:

Nice. I wish we had more large birds of prey nearby. They are around but not right in my backyard like you have them.

So when do we get to see some examples from that 800mm lens? :coffee:

Pat, a question for the BIF king. :sombrero: When shooting birds in flight do you set your camera to use only the center focus point or do you have a group of the focus points active and let the camera choose which one to lock on to?

When shooting still wildlife I like using just the center focus point so I know what the camera is focused on. When tracking a moving object I'm thinking it may be better to open that range up a bit since it's difficult to keep the object your tracking directly in the range of that single center focal point.

What's your approach?

Thanks.

I always leave the camera on the Center Focus Point unless I rotate the body to Portrait Mode which changes where the animals head usually is.

What I do is swap the focus mode to Al Servo which helps with Focus Tracking. That mode sucks for anything that isn't moving, so you need to know how to swap it fast and know your camera really well. If the bird lands and it's near or on water or branches are moving in the background, the focus will automatically move to anything that's moving and ruin your shot. This isn't a big deal if you're following an animal and the background is static, then it works perfectly. A little practice will help you find the buttons fast so you can switch between the two really fast

For a shot like this, the Roseate Spoonbill was ready to take to flight, I swapped the focus mode real quick and locked on just as it took to flight following it the entire way. I find it's better to shoot a little wide to be sure to not crop off any wing tips or feet, then crop the image to your liking in Post Processing

Does that make since?

Nice Brad! My husband and I saw one when we went to Bryce Thompson Arboretum a year or so ago that looked quite similar. It was my first time seeing one, and my pictures aren't as close but still cool to see!
