Would this be a good Idea?

My father in law has an old Warn 8274 from 1979 that he said he'd give me. It looks to be in relatively good shape. I am planning to put it in a bumper on the front of a 1st generation Tundra. Would it be worth the weight, or would a newer lighter winch be better?

make sure its an 8274 and not an 8250 or whatever they were called with the hand brake and no free spool.

An 8274 is an amazing winch but fitting it onto a newer truck like a Tundra may be a bit of a pain.

If its from 1979, its likely an 8274. The '74' in 8274 indicated the year they started making them.

Is it worth it? You betcha. The 8274 is the best 8000 pound class winch out there, hands down. You would be hard pressed to find anyone (anyone who has actually owned/used one)who would disagree with its performance. The weight differences between an 8274 or a M8000 is negligible at best (without cable), and you can use synthetic line on both. Not to mention its free.

The only downside is the physical size (much taller) and forward mounting of the winch. It usually requires a little fab work, or a 8274 specific bumper to get it mounted up solid.

I got mine for free also, which allowed me to put a little money into on the rebuild (gasket kit, etc). A little elbow grease, a few parts, a rewire on the solenoid pack, some paint, and its as good as new.

For one thing the spool holds to much line, 150', for another they are too fast. And they last forever, everybody likes new stuff, if you get an 8274 you will never get to buy a new winch. What fun is that? They have also been around forever, lord know why Warn still makes them.

An 8274 is a sweet winch. There is a reason they have been around so long. I have one on my FJ55 and love it. I would definitely take it and the price is right! Give it a good service and you will probably never have a problem with it!

It's on a Tacoma not a Tundra, but CLynn85 was able to put an 8274 on his 2nd gen Tacoma.

The size between the 1st gen Tundra and the 2nd gen Tacoma are similar. Should be quite feasible on a Tundra. But if you don't take it, I'll give $45!

Thanks for all of your comments. If I can get my Ford sold, I will save enough cash to hopefully do the 100 series bull bar and the 8274.

A '79 model would be an 8274.
The 8274 I bought new in '75 (for $400) is still going strong. I like them enough I bought 2 more in the past few years. :sombrero:
