Me ain't be known' much 'bout these Jeeps, BUT

Are these engines BORED or truly STROKED via crank and a different block?

Stroked via the use of a 4.2 crank, minimal boring and some head work.

How do you get around the smog issue? I would love more pulling power out of my TJ but as an 05 I'm concerned about getting around the Ca. smog details.

I've learned something recently in CA smog land. As long as it looks stock and runs clean, it will go through.

The stroker setup would be a good example of that. Its extremely hard to tell if its in there and as long as you've got a stock looking header and a cat on there I'd imagine you'd be ok.

That top bolt is a real PITA to get out isn't it? I've had the AW4 out of me TJ a few times messing with things and the swap I did on an XJ a while ago was good fun (swapped a .70 OD AW4 for a .75).

I haven't tried pulling the engine without yanking the trans yet, but I know getting that AW4 torque converted lined up with the spot on the crank is not fun when just moving the tranny around. I can't imagine that its going to work good lining it up on an engine crane. Good luck with that on reassembly.

Hey, another Hijack... :)

Do you know what vintage AW4 had which OD gear? Is there any interchange via splitting the case to swap internals? I think they changed the involute tooth profile on the transfer cases around 1997 or so but am uncertain about the transmission.

Was generally the Renix ones that had the .70 and the HO/Chrylser injection that had the .75. I think the .75s also have a 23 spline output vs the 21 of the .70. So you'd want to get the 231 that was attached to it or swap in the input gear.

Only thing to watch swapping them is that the computers expect differet TPS inputs (backwards from each other). If you just keep the computer you had it will work just fine though.

.75 OD + 4.10s + renix Jeep seemed to work pretty darn good on the one we did this swap on.

Go figure. Looks like I'm running too new a Jeep to get away with it. I was looking at the tech sheets, and it looks like no dice for me. Although I here there is a company in New York doing paxton style super chargers. That would help when towing, but so would an 8cyl.

I'm good enough with what I got, so I guess my pop is right on this one. "It ain't broke, so don't fix it."

Out with the old and in with the new

Now that the old 4.0 is out the process reverses itself and many of the parts taken off the old engine are now re-installed on the new 4.6 Stroker.

Shocker

VanDOOM!
Did you compare the costs associated with the stroker vs going with a 350 or a Ford 302?

What about fuel economy comparisons?

THanks

We ended up welding a wrench to the star bolt to get a good enough grip to break it free.
What a good idea, put 2 reverse torx bolts in the most inaccessable location:elkgrin: I've felt your pain. I always replace those with hex heads when the motor goes back in:)

Do you have to do anything with the fuel injection or computer to run the stroker?

Mike,

With the C.A.R.B. requirements here in California it is easiest to keep as much as possible to match the original appearence of the same engine. Using the same computer also allows me to pass the same requirements as my original 1990 engine.

The engine compartment in the XJ is already small even with a 6 cyl. I assume anything is possible, but I believe there would have to be a lot of additional modification to fit even the smallest V8.

I really have no idea what to expect on fuel use.....time will tell.

Thanks,
Fred
