What's with the "white stuff"????

About 5000 miles ago I replaced the OEM water pump and thermostat housing with a Hesco high preformance model. It appears that the serpentine belt was too tight and cause an early failure of the bearing.

I looked into replacing the bearing myself and found when I presses the assembly out of the housing, a white flaky substance has bonded with the aluminum housing and impeller.

Anyone know what caused this, it may have something to do with the brand or type of coolant

About ready to go back in........

Just about ready to go back in, Had to fix one of the flywheel threads with a Heli-coil but other than that the re-assembley has has gone smooth. We are replacing all the sensors and hoses while we have the engine out. (so much easrier now) I went ahead and put out for another Hesco water pump.

Once put back together, I'll post a small video with the start up and break-in.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner......

Do you have to do anything with the fuel injection or computer to run the stroker?

Yes Big Al,

we are replacing the injectors with 24 lb ones. The computor is left alone.

We also are replacing the Ignition system and having the throttle body bored out to 62 mm.

Thanks,
Fred

FYI, I had a little bit of pinging with my Golen stroker initially. I ran some Lucas octane booster until I got a Hesco adjustable fuel pressure regulator installed today. The part number for the 91-95 engines is HES9195FR. It came preset at 44 psi. After my test run up the Mt. Baldy road at 44 psi, I can say that the ping is gone and throttle response improved (I was not unhappy with original throttle response at all). I will report back with MPG #'s if there is any change on Monday.

Mario, Thanks for the report

Thanks for the insight,

I will wait for your report after Monday before I make any decision.

I'm still maybe a week out from having the engine installed and break-in.

Thanks for your help,
Fred

Varooooooooom!

Finally got her in and started! :wings:

Here is a brief clip just after the 20 minute cam break-in session. My little camera wasn't able to pick up the sound too well so you might need to turn your sound up.

Thanks,
Fred

How's your 4.6 going? FYI, I opted to remove the Hesco regulator and put in a Split Second FTC. Much better results and more control over performance. More details on this thread:

If you consider this route instead and go with a FTC, contact Mark at S.S. first so that he can select the right version for you. Drop me a line and I can share the map I created with you as a baseline.

All is well here......

With only 400 miles on the engine I can hardly give an experienced report but for now the engine is running great. I have had no pinging power issues. Lots of low end torque and the local hills I have climbed cause no issues with either heat or pinging.

This new 4.6 is actually running cooler than the 4.0 did. I had alreday upgraded to a three row radiator and a high performance water pump w/housing.

In talking with Chad he said that the pinging can be more an issue with the 91and later models. Guess having the older systems works out better for once!

Busy with body and uni-frame upgrade issues so the Cherokee has spent more time on the lift at my shop than on the road.

Read your other Thread and wow you have really put on some miles! I'm the original owner of my 1990 and it only has 135,000 miles!

You've really done some other very fine work to your MJ, lots of detail work in the pictures. Maybe I'll post some "work in progress" pics later on some of my lessor endeavors.

Thanks,
Fred

Fred,

Glad to here that you a running without the minor ping issue I had.

I had a high flow water pump but removed it as the coolant was not getting enough dwell time in the radiator. My experience with the Golen running cooler than the 4.0 is the same for me too. It'll go to about 230 pushing hard up a grade with the AC on with 100 degree ambient temps but i consider that to good performance.

Thanks for the kudos. I've had my MJ since new and the last time I thought of retiring it for a new rig, there was an outcry from my friends who said that they would intervene if I even tried. They said that the rig is quintessential "Mario".

I look forward to seeing what else you do to your rig.

Status on Stroker

At 400 miles on the new engine I blew out the exhaust gasket on cylinder 5 & 6, the gasket they gave with the kit was questionable so we upgraded. Now that I have 500 miles on the engine I have changed the oil and filter and will re-torque the exhaust manifold bolts.

No other issues on the break-in period, Only use a quarter of a quart of oil the first 500 miles.

Engine has ran real stong especially on the low end. I have installed a temporary transmission temperature gauge. Seems it is running a bit high according to the research on optimum trans fluid temperature.

I'm leading a group on the Mojave Road this weekend and will see how she does. I may end up having to install an auxiliary trans cooller with fan.

Went ahead and installed the bigger tires (35's) and 16" rims. With the Bushwasker flares removed seems to clear ok without any further cutting or lift.

I continue with the uni-body reinforcement for the roll cage I am designing will proabably start a new thread on it.

Here is a pic of some of the rear uni-body work so far.

What temp on the trans are you experiancing? and where did you install the sender? If you have the power/comfort switch on your model use the comfort mode as it keeps the torque converter locked more which will help keep your temps down.
