From Stock To Stacked...The Story Of A JK

The Jeep has been missing something. From the back, it looks great...the fast back hard top isn't something you see every day. From the sides, the 40" tires gives it a nice stance. But from the front, it just wasn't measuring up...looked like any other Jeep running around. However, in keeping with the FUNCTION over LOOKS, I didn't want to do anything that wouldn't improve the Jeep as an off-road and/or expedition vehicle. Brad (Overbuilt Customs) thought it needed a stinger, so we got to work.

The pipe was then cut to the distance needed and bent to the shape we wanted.

Looks good.

Excess was then cut off.

The area of the bumper it was going on was then sanded down to bare metal.

Then the stinger was tacked on.

After making sure it was centered, it was welded on.

The bumper where the support beams would contact was then sanded down to bare metal.

The support beams were then bent into the shape we wanted.

The support beams were then notched so they'd fit the main stinger's bent tube.

Then the support beams were tacked on.

Once welded in place and the rough spots of the welds were sanded down, it was spray painted.

And now I have a stinger!

I'll be picking up the rear bumper this week from the powder coater place and will drop off the front bumper to them next week.

Although it look really well made and its clear alot of care and detail were put into fabbing and installing, its just not for me.

I don't think I would do something like that unless I were intending to be climbing some overly steep rock face where I needed a strap up high creating a counter balance of force pulling the nose down so I didn't flip backwards. You may be intending to do that, sooooooooo, cool! :sombrero:

Nice work though, looks like a clean install! :victory:

Yep, I'm going some pretty extreme off-roading between April and October (hence the Dana 60 axels and 40" tires). If you're curious you can go to www.wheelersforthewounded.org. :)

Well, it certainly has flex appeal.

And the stinger makes him look like he's happy to see you...

Count-down to road-trip time. :smiley_drive:

Yep, less than a month to go until the WFTW program kicks off. :wings:

just looked through your 'calender'...
impressive list of tours on your agenda... :smiley_drive:

I'll certainly be seeing quite a bit of America during the 6 month program.

I picked up the rear bumper from the powder coater place today...turned out great. I went ahead and mounted the low profile (rectangular) KC HiLiTES to it, but did not wire them up yet (that will be done on Sunday).

I'm going to Daytona Beach tomorrow, will remove the doors and T-tops, and get some new pictures.

I'm still debating on having the front bumper powder coated or just hitting it with black spray paint. I'll decide Sunday. If I go with the powder coating, that will be dropped off at the shop on Monday and will hopefully be done by Friday.

Still lots to do, but it's coming along.

I have every intention of being the future owner of this JK after the raffle. As such, I would prefer it to be powder coated. Thanks :)

LOL!

You must not have heard...the raffle was cancelled. I thought I only needed a permit for where the raffle was held, but apparently I need a permit for every state a raffle ticket is sold. With the start of the program only 4 weeks away, there isn't enough time to get all the permits. It's a shame that the law stops people from doing nice things (the proceeds would have gone to a military based charity), but that's the way the cookie crumbles. So, I refunded all the money from the raffle tickets sold...think there was about 120 sold at the time of the cancellation. :(

I'm becoming less and less of a fan of powder coating. If you get out and use the Jeep you're going to scratch things up and touching up with satin Krylon or Rustoleum is so much easier. So I'd just prime it and rattle can it. And it's easier to do mods involving welding when you know you just have to rattle can it afterwards.

Yep, that's the reason I'm leaning towards spray painting it. Were it a mall crawler, I'd spend the cash to have it powder coated, but since I'll be using this quite a bit and most likely chipping it up here and there, it would be easier (and MUCH cheaper) to rattle can it.

Here's the rear bumper after powder coating. I'm really liking the built in hitch receiver. I've angled the rear KC HiLiTES out so I can see better when backing up the trailer. TeraFlex is probably going to wonder what I've done to their bumper. :)

I shot down to Daytona Beach today for Bike Week and took the doors off the Jeep. The bikers liked the JK and I got a lot of positive comments, thumbs up, etc.
