All new 2010 4runner revealed...

Looks like today is the day for the "official" launch.

Overall, I have to say I like it. It's a little more "blunt" looking than the 4th gen but I think it's a good look for the 4runner.

Best of all, from the photos I'm seeing it does appear that we get a manual T-case lever back in the 4runner, albeit at the cost of the multi-mode 4wd (initial reports I've seen indicate that it either has a standard 2wd/4wd system like the FJC, or a full-time 4wd system like the Prado/GX470.)

No V8, although the new 4.0l V6 produces 10 more HP.

Will look forward to seeing/hearing more. Maybe if I keep my 3rd gen in good running condition for a few years I can pick up a used one in 2011 or 2012.

Looks like the perfect compromise between the FJC and 4runner and I personally like the looks much more than the last model.

If the rumors are true that 2010 is the last year for the FJC this would make sense. Toyota would realize that they have to appeal to both the true off-roaders as well as the soccer moms with the new 'Runner.

Price is a bit painful, but I don't buy new anyway (according to the registration paperwork, the MSRP for my SR5 was around $25k - in 1999! :Wow1: )

Love the crisper eyes, hate the new-ish trend towards very small greenhouses with lots of sheetmetal leading up to them - kills visibility and makes the car look bottom-heavy.

EDIT: Looking at more pix, it's nowhere near as bad as the H3 - looks like certain angles just make it look funky.

The one thing I don't get is the 4cyl. If they offered it with a manual transmission, that would be fine. But I would imagine the 4 cyl/automatic 4x4 combo would be very sluggish and not much fun to drive, without really giving much in the way of superior MPG.

Who knows, maybe I'm wrong. Toyota has done surprising things before. I just think that a 4 cyl with the 6 speed manual from the FJC would probably make a pretty neat little economy 4x4 without seriously compromising off-road ability.

Man, I am feeling the love. Very Nissan Patrol

Look at the departure angle!

I haven't checked, but I think it's about the same OAL as the 4th gen, but to me it looks shorter. I think maybe they lengthened the cabin and shortened the hood and that makes it look both taller top to bottom and shorter front-to-back.

My guess is they'll position this as a best-of-both-worlds SUV so that when the FJC is dropped they can direct them to this.

Also I'm thinking that even though the V8 is not available now, I'll bet they put one in eventually. And they may also offer a manual tranny (again, to fill in the gap left when the FJC is dropped from the lineup.)

Everything we've seen has been either the Trail Edition or the Limited. It will be interesting to see if the base-model SR5 will get any of the good mods like the rear locker. I would hope so but they may de-content the SR5 both to keep the price low, and to make the trail-edition that much more desirable.

Locking Rear Diff

Does it come with a locking rear diff? Trucktrend does not mention it and Edmunds says it's included.

Included in the trail edition along with some other high-tech traction control devices. Not sure if it's even available on the SR5. Don't know about the limited but I'd guess no.

Update: Just read the official press release

As I had first thought, you cannot get a 4x4 with the 4 cyl. The 4cyl is only available with the RWD model (when Nissan first came out with the Xterra they did the same thing: Offered a 2wd version with a 4 cyl.)

Makes more sense although I'd still like to see how a 4 cyl/6 speed manual/4x4 combo would work. Not everybody needs screaming acceleration.)
