I found this small outfit in the Overland Journal 2010 Gear Guide:

I personally don't like the look of these 'improved' Roorkhee chairs. Plus, one of the traits of the original design (from what I've read, I've never laid hands on one) is that the joints are all kinda loose until you put weight on it. Then it locks together. That way it is stable on uneven ground. It looks like the 'improved' chairs may have engineered out that trait.

Lewis Drake sell some nice ones, at $700/ea and up.

Those are all gorgeous.

I've recently developed the belief that it's better to pay more for something you'll only have to buy once than it is to repeatedly purchase a more disposable, lower quality item. Thus, I can justify spending money on one of those chairs that I will be able to pass down to my grandchildren over the $5 Walmart folding chair.

I'm pleased with myself over this development.

Makes me wish I had an elephant to pack things on, instead of the teeny tiny space my Jeep offers :)

Did anybody get to see the Campaign Furnature company stuff at the 2010 Overland Expo? Can you tell me anything about it. Feel free to PM me to tell me what you thought of it. I was stuck on a pesky trip in Moab and missed out.
Edit: He makes them in Maple, Cheery or Walnut and being new to the dry desert I don't know which wood would be any better. Any advise apreciated.

To boot, chairs are "Only" $300, which is not bad if they are good, I suppose.

Anyways, thought I'd mention it.

EDIT: Woops, sorry, that pic I linked to is huge; hopefully not a problem.

I was actually setup with Paul May from www.Equipt1.com next to the Campaign Furniture Company at the recent Expo! Both Paul and I left the event as proud owners of 2 chairs each!!! Andy and Kris are the owners and artist of www.campaignfurniturecompany.com and turn every piece of wood on them. They were a hit at our booth as we had them setup under our ezi-awn awnings. From what I was told they sold out at the event and everybody was talking about them. I've always wanted this style of furniture to go with my Land Rover camping set up, but couldn't justify the crazy cost of the name brand stuff. I was blown away at how comfortable the chairs were and also how small they were when in carry mode. They come with a great canvas bag and take only a minute to assemble. They are a winner in my book!! If you have anymore questions feel free to shoot me a PM!

cheers,

Beowulf,

Thank you for your kind words. This is Jim from African Sporting Creations and we are the exclsusive distributors of this fine product. It is hand made off original pieces and not a cheap knock-off. Wood is African Mahogany, brass fittings, thick vegetable cured leather and the same canvas that covers most of the safari vehicles in Africa. We also offer safari canvas luggage, leather sprits carriers and all kinds of other items you do not really need but should have. Our site is www.africansc.com and we were previously known as Sporting Wood but when we started sponsoring TV shows we had to become politically correct.

Hi there,

I am the owner/designer for Campaign Furniture Company. To answer your comment about the stability on uneven ground is, yes, this chair also adjusts it self to uneven surfaces. It molds itself to whatever ground you may have it on, this was a big consideration in the design process. I think you will find it rather comfortable to sit in as well unlike other chairs available, ergonomics of the body were considered when building this chair. It not only is "pretty" but comfortable.

It is funny that when people see an expensive price tag they think it must be better and that they are not buying someones new Mercedes. I am keeping my prices "low" because it is were they should be for me to make a profit. I do not believe in gouging the public just because every one else is. I hand build every piece with woods sustainably harvested in the united states. All of my aluminum is tig welded and river rock tumbled for a nice patina. The canvas is military spec #8 BritishTan sewn with nylon thread, very strong.

I hope this answers your question as to the stabilty on uneven ground. I hope whatever chair you sit in, it brings you many great memories and inspires you to go see the world!

Cheers,
Andy

If you live in Africa and sit in the bushveld looking at Eliphants, Red Wine @ 45deg c plus doesnt go down so well, so we chill our redwine to about 10 to 16 deg c.

AH HA! A plausible answer. When it's that hot, I prefer a V&T or a very cold Modelo.

I really love the chair that came in today! The comfort was as big a suprise as the looks and quality. It definatly has full size comfort and feel to it but packs down as small as my other camp chairs. The adjustable back makes it great for kicking back or upright and working at a table. Its also very light. Only a few lbs heavier than my typical folding camp chairs. 7.5 vs 11 lbs. The canvas storage bag tucks up underneath the seat and the whole thing is just great! Thanks for a great product!
