Keep a spare CMP sensor in the glove box too and know how to change it. Get a quality one from International or Ford, the cheap aftermarket made in China ones are known to have issues. The other issues I've repaired quite a bit on the 7.3s are the under valve cover harnesss and valve cover...
PM me the last 8 digits of your VIN if you want to know what components your bus was built with. I'm a mobile mechanic for an International dealer and can look that stuff up by VIN, I work on buses for quite a few school districts too.
Excellent story. As someone who is just a year or two behind you in age it brought back memories of some "foolish" but totally awesome things I did as a young man.
Double check your glow plugs and relay. All the 7.3 IDI cold start issues I've worked on are because there were a few glow plugs burned out. Also make sure your batteries, cables, and starter motor are good so it cranks over fast enough. Try running some diesel additive in colder weather too...

I work at an International dealer in Spokane WA and just found out they are taking in 5 shortbus Ford E350s on trade. They are all 7.3 diesels, two are handicap other three are normal. They are 2001 to 2002 models with 180k-200k miles. WA schools have a pretty rigorous safety inspection...
