Assume you have a 3.0l. I didn't need a puller either. Only an anti-rotate holder as others have mentioned. Hammer wouldn't be recommended. An anti-rotate holder can be made cheap. I used some aluminum bar stock and 3 bolts.
Pretty sure this is the same with any transfer case. The Hi and LO ranges do not have syncros, so you need to be stopped and out of gear to smoothly shift between the 2 ranges.

If you have no history on the PM of the timing belt, put that VERY high on your to/do list. It is a 60,000 mile PM item and if it (or a tensioner or water pump) goes your engine will be toast. 150K and no records, its 2.5x over due.
