    HAM radio/amateur radio FAQ

You understood perfectly. This is all great info, I'm just asking questions. You've made some excellent points and I've modified the extra class section to reflect that. I honestly never considered the international aspects of the extra class, that's my inexperience showing. :) I define...

    HAM radio/amateur radio FAQ

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that license is no longer available? Obviously people who have it still benefit from the privileges. xtatik, Again, all great points, I'm not an extra, so I obviously don't spend a lot of time in those bands. =) I will adjust my description so it's a little less...

    HAM radio/amateur radio FAQ

I can appreciate your love of the extra class for all of the reasons you've mentioned. However, I'm not sure DXing would be a benefit to most of the people reading this article. The article is intended to get the average expenditioneer up and started. I'm not aware of any limitations to the...

dual radio and one antenna setup

The connections are generally the same, however 2 to 1 will not work because the SWR would most likely be WAY off and you'd risk burning up your transmitter. Sorry man, there's not free lunch here with 10m/CB and ham on the same wire. Just run two cables/antennas like the rest of us. ;-) The...

    CTSS Q's

No worries, I was pretty sure I knew what you meant, but there's lots of stuff I don't know so I wasn't sure! lol That's correct. Regardless of the fact that it's called "privacy" by some vendors, it provides no such thing. Also, keep in mind that it is illegal to encrypt your signal in any...

    CTSS Q's

Do you mean CTCSS? If you do, then yes, it will do exactly what you're asking. Most radios can be programed to filter out everything that does not have the tone it's looking for (that's exactly what the repeaters do you are referring to). So if you happen to be talking on a channel that has a...

    HAM radio/amateur radio FAQ

hah that's awesome, I spoke to a kid the other day on ham radio that couldn't have been more than 8! While I'll admit these kids are intelligent and obviously driven, they aren't all geniuses! If they can past the test, so can you!

    autopatch

We're fortunate enough to have lots of them here in Arizona. If your radio can send DTMF tones (telephone tones) you can use your radio with a repeater that supports autopatch. There are ways around this, so if you don't have a radio like that let me know and we'll come up with other options...

    HAM radio/amateur radio FAQ

"the state of being easy to see, hear or understand". I don't particularly care what word is used, but I figured the standard definition of clarity would be something easily understood by those who are not already in ham radio. Again, I also compared FM radio to FM ham because it's something...
