Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure you must take them in order. I know when I took the test they let anyone who wanted to take the general to do so in the same day. Most don't or if they do they don't even come close to passing, but it isn't unheard of...
Please feel free to distribute this information to whoever you like! Credit me or not, doesn't really matter to me. I just want the information out there.
This is intended for US amateurs, I apologize for not including info for people in other countries. I'm simply ignorant of the rules...
thanks! I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I'm working up more here soon. I'd like to do an entire video on what SWR is and how to tune an antenna. I think that may realy help some people with CB issues.
I put together a 10 min video on my youtube channel explaining some different comm options. This case FRS, GMRS, CB, and HAM. I hope to get more in depth soon, but I thought this might help people who need a general overview of what the popular choices are...
Just wanted to add, which I think has already been said, stay away from all handhelds. It will severely limit your range. No matter what the technology if you're antenna is inside the metal box (your car) it's really going to impact the performance. Unless of course you're planning on doing...
I was looking at the kenwood kes-5, there's a bunch on ebay right now for cheap. Do you think that would work well with it? Honestly I want to use each radio independently to adjust the volume so I can easily filter out one source if I need to for communication. I was thinking of not even...
That's correct it is a hybrid radio (1-7 FRS/GMRS shared, 8-14 FRS only, 15-22 GMRS only). Anything above .5 watt or GMRS requires a license on this radio. When speaking 2w is as easy as "pushing the top portion of the PTT button" I think that most people wont' be using .5 watt often. ;-) I...
SX700R (I think SXR700 is a typo?) is a fine radio but it is not FRS. It's GMRS, that's why it sounds so much better. You are using a LOT more power. I HATE to be that "guy" but I feel I should at least mention that GMRS requires a license to use. Just FYI. Might as well go HAM if you're...
I really love the Garmin Rino FRS/GMRS GPS radios. They might be a bit more than you're looking for, but at least you can use it for more than just FRS. I also have a motorola T6320 talkabout that I absolutely love. It's a great unit. Either of those are near the top of the food chain when...
You definitely want to program the ones with autopatch capability. Both are popular repeaters and you can pretty much gaurantee someone will be listening if you need emergancy assistance. If not, dial 911 on the autopatch.

Why are you comparing a hand held 2m radio to your 6' external mounted CB antenna? I do not think CB is worthless at all, but I find it extremely hard to see TECHNOLOGY wise a single area with CB radio is superior. Of course all the technology arguments mean nothing if no one uses your...
It's all about external antennas (which of course are illegal on FRS equipment per FCC regulations). The external antenna on a CB radio will get you a lot better performance than a hand held FRS. Hand held to hand held, I agree, frs is far superior plus you get FM vs AM. I've often found that...
The mag mini is only rated for 28.000 to 29.690 MHz Frequency Range? Those are outside the "normal" CB 1-40 frequencies. Do they sell another radio that works on CB freqs?
If it only transmits 4w on the cb frequencies it would not be illegal. He does mention that he does not know if the...
