Decided against the subframe lift. It is only suspension.
Originally, the subframe drop would have resolved the front tires rubbing the upper fender on full compression (35" tires). But the front CV axles are not strong enough to handle 35s reliably. After breaking one, I went to 34s...
Yes, I cut the ARB bumper. Front fenders were cut, rolled and welded to gain another 1" + clearance. It was necessary for the 35" tires. Not required for the 34x10.5s it has now. I just cut the bumper in line with the fender. I was going to have a flange welded on the cut edge but never did.
When vehicles get over 10yrs old there are many factors to will drop fuel economy. Mine was completely gone through. Every sensor, injectors rebuilt, new heads, plugs, wires... Synthetic fluids. Yes, mass air flow sensor can get dirty (use proper cleaner). Typically, you notice poor...
That style mount is great on road... but if you are hauling down back roads it will be bouncing all over the place. I found my tablet required 2 points of contact to be functional while driving on rough roads.
It varies for the 3.8L. Believe CA spec is 60k. Everywhere else is 90k. Manual has both listed. It should be fine for 90k with SOHC motor. However, I wouldn't run the belt longer than 8years or so. And your motor will be destroyed if it breaks, so sometimes sooner is better.
Have the heads rebuilt by reputable shop.
I did full head rebuild on my 03 Montero at 93k. It ran fine. However, these OHC motors wear hard. Guides were worn. Really brought the motor back to life doing the refresh. Used all OEM dealer parts. Great time for plugs, wires, injector rebuild...
Biggest problem isn't the skids. It's the mounts for the skids. Really better not to use factory mounting points. They are weak. I had to reinforce all of mine. That crossmember is weak too (seriously bent it).
I guess most people just do it for looks as they rarely use the truck. :)
Sweet! Must be nice driving it again!
That's some serious frame cutting. Why not flip the tie rod? Huge gap between the springs and tie rod...
Add some resi shocks and sway bars. :)
It was custom built by Joe @ Journey Off Road.
Gas tank is in stock location. It has custom skid to that also protects the carbon driveshaft ($$$). Protect the tank! I had to replace mine after damaging it. Much cheaper to get a skid. :)
I also had 3.15 Tcase gears (not installed)...
It was making noise because it automatically trying to engage park. I had some thing happen when ran out of gas. Don't put ignition into ACC if coasting in neutral.
Looks like the Marlin Crawler crew cleared the trail last year. There were some seriously large trees down! I'm not sure if they are planning to do the same this year. You guys may want to bring chain saws in case... Hope you put this back on the schedule for next year. I'll jump in on it. :)
Speedo is dead on with 35s and 4.90 gears. It reads 3-4 mph fast @ 60 with the 34s. Fuel mileage is very good (in my opinion). Lifetime average (26k miles) off road / on road was over 16mpg. Handful of tanks in the 22-24mpg range on trips (road driving for range). It was always rolling well...
Montero build is complete! And it is now moved to a new owner (my cousin). This truck will be missed. Purchased with 90k miles. It has just over 116k miles. 26k miles of trips and fun times! And probably $40k... Probably the most extensively modified 3rd Gen in the USA. To complete this...
